1999 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1999 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UConn

Most Outstanding Player: Richard Hamilton, UConn

Final Four: UConn, Duke, Michigan State, Ohio State

Shining Moments

  • This was the first national title for UConn coach Jim Calhoun. The Huskies had gone to three Elite Eight's in the previous decade, but this one cemented the Huskies program as a true national power. Richard Hamilton finished with 27 points and seven rebounds and UConn came away with a 77-74 victory over Duke in the title game.
  • Elton Brand dominated all season long, and that remained the case at the Final Four. Duke's big man, who wound up being taken first overall in the NBA Draft, had 18 points and 15 boards in a win over Michigan State to advance to the national title game. Brand also had 15 points and 13 rebounds in the loss to UConn.
  • Scoonie Penn was terrific all season in leading Ohio State to an improbable appearance in the Final Four, but UConn senior Ricky Moore, known as a lock-down defender, held Penn scoreless for the first 10 minutes and to just 11 points (on 3-of-13 shooting) overall in the national semifinals.
