2001 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

2001 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Duke

Most Outstanding Player: Shane Battier, Duke

Final Four:Arizona, Michigan State, Duke, Maryland

Shining Moments

  • Duke entered the tournament as the No. 1 team in the country, and didnít disappoint. The Blue Devils won all six of their games by double-digits, although they also needed the greatest comeback in Final Four history. They were down 22 to Maryland in the first half, but charged back to win by 11.
  • Six double-digit seeds won first-round games, including No. 15 Hampton knocking off No. 2 Iowa State. After Tarvis Williams hit a game-winning turnaround with 6.9 seconds left, a Hampton player lifted coach Steve Merfeld up from behind; the excitement captured in that moment was a lasting image.
  • Nate Burton hit a layup as time expired to give Georgetown a 63-61 win over Arkansas in the first round. Meanwhile, Missouriís Clarance Gilbert hit a baseline jumper with 0.9 seconds left against Georgia.
  • The tournament expanded to 65 games in 2001, meaning a play-in game between No. 64 and No. 65 was needed.
