2002 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

2002 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Maryland

Most Outstanding Player: Juan Dixon, Maryland

Final Four:Indiana, Oklahoma, Maryland, Kansas

Shining Moments

  • Maryland went on a 22-8 run over the final 10 minutes against Indiana in the championship game, giving the Terrapins their first-ever national title. The two teams combined for just 116 points, which was the lowest in the shot-clock era.
  • Indiana was an unlikely candidate to reach the title game, entering the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 seed. In the Sweet 16 against top-seeded Duke, star guard Jason Williams was fouled with 4.2 seconds left after making a 3-pointer. But Williams would miss the game-tying free throw.
  • Two double-digit seeds reached the regional finals, as No. 10 Kent State (behind the play of NFL star Antonio Gates) and No. 12 Missouri both were on the doorstep of the Final Four.
  • Florida was on the losing end of a buzzer-beater in 2002, as Creightonís Terrell Taylor hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to give the No. 12-seeded Bluejays a first-round upset.
