2003 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

2003 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Syracuse

Most Outstanding Player: Carmelo Anthony, Syracuse

Final Four:Marquette, Kansas, Texas, Syracuse

Shining Moments

  • Carmelo Anthony put forth one of the more dominant NCAA tournament performances in recent history, carrying Syracuse to a national championship after averaging 20.2 points and 9.8 rebounds. He was simply unstoppable throughout the tournament, going for 53 points and 24 rebounds in the Final Four.
  • With seconds winding down in the national title game, Kansas guard Michael Lee seemed to have a wide-open look at a game-typing 3-pointer. But Syracuse forward Hakim Warrick came out of nowhere to block it with his outstretched fingertips.
  • Dwyane Wade went for a triple-double against Kentucky in the regional final, totaling 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The triple-double (only the fifth in tournament history) capped a tremendous run for Wade, who averaged 22.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists in leading Marquette to its first Final Four since 1977.
  • One year after winning the national title, Maryland was on the verge of getting bounced in the first round by UNC-Wilmington. But Drew Nicholas drove the length of the court and hit a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Terps a 75-73 win.
