2005 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

2005 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: North Carolina

Most Outstanding Player: Sean May, North Carolina

Final Four:North Carolina, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan State

Shining Moments

  • This tournament produced one of the wildest games ever -- Illinois' 90-89 overtime victory over Arizona in the Elite Eight. Arizona led the Illini by 15 points with a little more than four minutes remaining, but Bruce Weber's team stormed back thanks to Deron Williams and Dee Brown.
  • North Carolina's team was so stacked that Marvin Williams was the Tar Heels sixth man even though he was the second overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-9 forward came off the bench in the title game and got the game-winning stick back.
  • Sean May's 26-point effort in the title game for UNC had lots of people remembering what his father, Scott May, did in 1976. Scott May was the National Player of the Year that season for Indiana.
