2009 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

2009 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: North Carolina

Most Outstanding Player: Wayne Ellington, North Carolina

Final Four:North Carolina, Michigan State, Connecticut, Villanova

Shining Moments

  • Villanova's Scottie Reynolds went coast-to-coast in the East Regional final to give Villanova the 76-74 win over No. 1 seed, and fellow Big East brethren Pitt the loss, sending the Wildcats to their first Final Four since 1985.
  • Siena beats Ohio State in the first-round 8/9 game, a double-overtime affair that led to one of Bill Raftery's most famous calls ever. After Ronald Moore hit a couple of big shots in both overtimes, Raftery cried, "Onions! Double order!"
  • Roy Williams etched his name into history, as he won his second national championship, winning it with another UNC team that was stacked with talent. Many coaches have won a title; few get to two.
  • A small, sort of startling fact here: The 2009 tournament is the only time since seeding began that every No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seed made the Sweet 16.
