Scouting
  • With Cauley-Stein, it's all about defense. The Kentucky center was the best defensive player in the NCAA in 2015, capable of both locking down the paint as well as moving onto the perimeter to slow down opposing guards. The offense is still a work in progress, but with his high level of athleticism he should be able to find a role. Cauley-Stein may never be a star in the traditional sense, but he's the kind of guy every team would love to have as a defensive anchor potentially for the next decade.
  • Cauley-Stein is one of the best, most complete defensive players to enter the draft in a long time. He might be the most mobile 7-footer to enter the draft since Tyson Chandler in 2001, and possibly the best pick-and-roll defenders as well. He's fully capable of switching onto guards for extended period of time, as well as going into the paint and protecting the rim, which is a rare combination. Offense is more of a mixed bag, but he's good at rebounding on that end as well as getting out into transition.
  • His offensive game is a mixed bag, especially as it refers to his ball-skills. He's not much of a creator on offense, and it's doubtful that he'll ever be one. While his jump shot improved a bit this season, it's still not a weapon to be counted on consistently. Defensively, he's only an average defender on the block when compared to the rest of his skills on that end.

Mock Draft
  • Round: 1    Pick: 9

    Matt Moore's Analysis:

Anderson Varejao can't live forever and Tristan Thompson may still be better as a four. Pairing him with WCS creates unbelievable length and athleticism.

  • Round: 1    Pick: 12

    Gary Parrish's Analysis:

I'm higher on Cauley-Stein than most -- mostly because I know at least one of his skills (shot-blocking) will translate to the NBA level. Still, his motor doesn't run all of the time. That's an obvious concern. (Previous: 8)

  • Round: 1    Pick: 14

    Zach Harper's Analysis:

While Alex Len was the fifth pick in a bad draft last season and Miles Plumlee has been a revelation in Phoenix this year, grabbing the best defensive big man prospect in the draft would give them a lot of insurance and options for the future. (Previous: 10)
