3 Nerlens Noel, F

Defensive freak, one who was on pace to bypass Anthony Davis' single-season blocks record at Kentucky -- before an ACL injury ended his season. He's not necessarily a franchise-builder, but he is good on the defensive, so good that he should be a 10-year starter if he remains healthy. Health is the big concern, because Noel's had two big injuries in his young career (broke a leg in high school) -- Matt Norlander

Terrific wingspan, good eye for the ball on defense and tremendous work ethic. Does not take plays off. A good floor-runner and exception rebounder. Many see his potential as untapped in a lot of ways, yet still already showing evidence of why he's worth a No. 1 pick. -- Matt Norlander

Offensive game as a whole needs work. There are doubts he can ever develop a legitimate front-to-the-basket game, and his post game is still undeveloped. Plus, he has limited range. Needs at least 10 more pounds of muscle. -- Matt Norlander

Noel isn't a sure-bet future All-Star, and taking a guy No. 1 overall who is recovering from a torn ACL isn't ideal. But, at worst, the one-and-done product will make an impact defensively, and he's the smartest pick here. (Previous: 1)

The Cavs don't have to figure out if Tristan Thompson can play the 5, and get to just play him at the 4. They can trade Varejao for a huge bucket of assets and play a big, young lineup. If they keep Varejao they can develop Noel slowly which is for the best. They're one of the few teams who can use and develop Noel.
