Noel, Muhammad feel power of social media -- and UK fans

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer
Oh, the fickle nature of Twitter – and the fickle nature of Kentucky fans. The Big Blue Nation will love you if you are a member, but they don't hesitate to stop their attention if you go elsewhere.

If you needed more proof, just look at the Twitter accounts of Nerlens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad.

Noel, the nation's top-ranked recruit who chose Kentucky over Georgetown and Syracuse, went into Wednesday evening with 25,475 followers on the social network. On Thursday morning, he currently has 40,350 followers. In just over 13 hours, the 6-foot-10 center has amassed an additional 15,000 followers – all for choosing Kentucky.

Meanwhile, Muhammad felt the opposite push from the Kentucky fanbase. The 6-foot-5 wing, ranked No. 2 in the class of 2012, chose UCLA over Kentucky and Duke on Wednesday evening. As a result, his social media clout plummeted on Twitter. In the two hours following his announcement, Muhammad lost nearly 4,000 followers.

Over the past several weeks and months, Noel and Muhammad have been inundated by tweet after tweet after tweet from fans telling them to go to a certain school. With each prospect setting a decision date for Wednesday night, the excitement was heightened and each player had fanbases on pins and needles. Every fanbase showered the two players with adoration in an effort to get momentum for their school.

Once the decisions are made, though, all of that stops. It's usually replaced by insults and hatred from the losing fanbase, and a huge increase in love from the chosen school's fanbase. Noel certainly felt the love from Kentucky fans; Muhammad, on the other hand, not so much.
