Notebook: Michigan State out front for Cliff Alexander

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cliff Alexander has been known as one of the top 10 or 15 prospects in the class of 2014 for some time now. At the Pangos All-American Camp last weekend, though, he made his claim for a top-five or even top-three nod.

Alexander, a 6-foot-9 center from Curie (Ill.), came away with Most Outstanding Player honors at the camp. He simply dominated down low, using his size and strength to overpower opponents. He played with great energy and made an effort to get good position for entry passes. He knows how to finish inside, and he knocked down face-up jumpers.

As far as recruiting, he is hearing from Michigan State, Illinois, DePaul, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Florida State, Florida, Tennessee and Connecticut.

Michigan State is the leader right now, with Alexander pointing to Spartans' coach Tom Izzo as the main reason.

Ohio State is also squarely in the running, and a visit could be in the works.

“I like the coaching staff, [Jared] Sullinger, Thad Matta,” Alexander said.

Hunter Myers continues to prove himself

Entering the April live period, Hunter Myers didn't have much of a reputation. A few regional schools had him on their radar, but that's about it.

That all changed in Las Vegas, where Myers burst onto the national scene with a stellar performance. Now that he has some buzz surrounding him, Myers is looking to prove it wasn't a fluke.

“This is the best of the best,” Myers said last weekend at the Pangos All-American Camp. “I'm a small-town kid, and there are some big, big names here.”

Myers, a 6-foot-7 forward from Douglass (Nev.), has a 4.5 GPA and wants to major in engineering.

Stanford, Harvard, California, Yale, Arizona, Idaho and Boston College are among the schools pursuing him. Myers is wide open and doesn't plan to take any visits this summer.

“I'm looking for a school with good academics and a good basketball program,” Myers said.
