Kansas and Alabama getting separation for Cat Barber

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – One of the major disappointments of the April live period was Boo Williams, which started off very poorly in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League.

However, after a 6-0 record in Oakland in late May, the legendary AAU program qualified for the Peach Jam.

One of the main reasons for the turnaround was the play of Anthony “Cat” Barber, who established himself as one of the best point guards in the class of 2013. He finished the EYBL averaging 15.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 20 games.

“Hopefully we keep it going,” Barber said. “[I was playing] great, I was getting my teammates involved.”

Barber, a 6-foot-2 prospect out of Hampton (Va.), is ranked No. 18 in the class. He is extremely quick and shifty with the ball, and is a pest defensively. Barber loves to jump passing lanes and create turnovers on the defensive end of the floor. He is able to get by his defender any time down the floor, and is terrific in transition.

The recruiting process is starting to heat up for Barber, with several schools coming at him. Kansas, Alabama, Virginia, Baylor, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Duke and Syracuse are all showing varying levels of interest.

“[I want a] good relationship with the coaches,” Barber said. “Someone that pushes me, makes me work hard. Somewhere I'm comfortable.”

Two schools are standing out: Kansas and Alabama.

“[Joe] Dooley contacts me a lot,” Barber said of the Kansas assistant coach. “I get a lot of mail from them, talk to them a lot. It's the same way with Alabama.”

With the contact period beginning on Friday, expect Barber to begin to speed up the recruiting process.

“It's going to be crazy, but we're going to handle it,” Barber said.
