Four-star forward Jarquez Smith boosts stock during spring

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Entering the spring, ranked Jarquez Smith as the No. 66 overall prospect in the class of 2013. Starting at the EYBL sessions in Minneapolis and Hampton, Smith proved that ranking was too low.

At 6-foot-9, Smith is a matchup nightmare. He knocks down shots from the perimeter and is also an effective defender and shot-blocker due to his length and athleticism.

“I'm a mismatch,” Smith said. “I'm tall so they put big men on me, but I can get around them. And I can handle, so I can also take [smaller guys] inside.”

The Jones County (Ga.) product feels he can attack the basket better and also be more consistent with his jump shot. If Smith gets more aggressive and assertive on a regular basis, he can be one of the better inside-outside prospects in the class of 2013.

Many schools are already in the mix for him, including Florida State, Florida, Missouri, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, DePaul, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Louisville and LSU.

Smith has taken two trips to Florida State, one to Georgia, and one to Mercer. He is still planning to go to Tennessee and Alabama, but wants to make a decision in August.

Florida State and Georgia are coming after him the hardest.

“I'm looking for good academics, playing time and graduation rate,” Smith said.
