Notebook: Cal gets another impact commitment in Jordan Mathews

After Jabari Bird committed to California on Wednesday, he made it clear he was going to try to convince other prospects to join him in Berkeley. We even said there might be a ripple effect from Bird's commitment.

But we didn't think it would happen this quickly, and Bird certainly didn't waste any time.

The Golden Bears made another impact pickup on Sunday, getting a pledge from guard Jordan Mathews.

Mathews just missed out on the updated top-100 rankings last week, but he's a big-time scorer who is tough to defend when his shot is falling. He chose California over several schools, including Kansas State, Colorado, San Diego State, Gonzaga, USC and others.

Mathews, the younger son of UCLA assistant coach Phil Mathews, knows how to score points. He has good range on his jumper, and he has a quick release when he gets the ball off kick-outs. The 6-foot-3 guard loves to attack the rim along the baseline or from the wing, and he is strong enough to finish at the rim. He sometimes has a tendency to force shots or do too much, but he can really get hot in a hurry.

Bird and Mathews are the first two members of Mike Montgomery's 2013 class, although Cal is still going for talented big men Aaron Gordon and Marcus Lee.

Chance Murray joins Arizona State

Unlike California, Arizona State has had a fairly tumultuous couple of weeks. The Sun Devils lost two assistant coaches in late August, and needed to make two hires this week.

Sunday brought good news to Tempe, though, as guard Chance Murray committed to Arizona State.

Murray is a 6-foot-3 guard from Price (Calif.). He knows how to get into the lane and finish after getting by his defender, but needs to be smarter with his decision-making and passing.

Stanford, Washington State, Rice and others were interested. Egor Koulechov is the other member of Herb Sendek's 2013 class.
