Wisconsin beats Michigan State; Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue also advance
Friday's game was the third in 2 1/2 weeks between these teams, with Michigan State winning by nine at East Lansing when Wisconsin was No. 1 and the Badgers squeezing out a two-point victory on Saturday. The Spartans also lost two close games to Ohio State and split two with Indiana, meaning they had one of the Big Ten's toughest in-conference schedules.
"I've said for three weeks you earn your keep if you do the job," coach Tom Izzo said. "I think this team has done their job. I'm tired of answering that question, to be honest with you."
He also did not want to address Spartans' foul troubles against Wisconsin, although he did call it "a joke."
Michigan State were whistled for 23 to the Badgers' 14, and that added up to Wisconsin making 16-of-27 free throws while the Spartans were 5-for-11.
"Nothing good will be said and nothing good will come out of my mouth and so I will look like a whiner and a crier," Izzo said. "But they beat us and they played awfully well."
Ohio State 72, Michigan 62
Greg Oden had 15 of his 22 points in the second half, and Ohio State won its 15th straight even though the Wolverines held a 47-25 rebounding edge.
The 7-foot Oden, the Buckeyes' prized freshman, showed he has moves around the basket to go with his shot-blocking and rebounding ability, scoring 11 points in the final 8:27 after Michigan had pulled to within four.
The Buckeyes (28-3) have not lost since Jan. 9, when they fell at Wisconsin, and Oden made sure the streak stayed alive. He was 8-for-12 from the field and 6-for-10 from the free throw line to go with eight rebounds and four blocks.
Lester Abram scored 13 and Jerret Smith 12 for the Wolverines (21-12). Leading scorer Dion Harris managed just nine on 1-for-13 shooting.
Illinois 58, Indiana 54, OT
Warren Carter scored 17 points, Shaun Pruitt added 16 and both came up big in overtime as Illinois (23-10) won its 18th straight at the United Center.
Carter ripped the ball away from Indiana's D.J. White and Pruitt scored after three misses to make it 53-50 3 minutes into overtime.
Rich McBride hit a free throw with 33 seconds left, and Carter added another to make it 55-50 with 17 seconds remaining after Indiana's Roderick Wilmont and A.J. Ratliff missed 3-pointers.
Armon Bassett led Indiana (20-10) with 18 points. White scored 14 and grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Hoosiers were leading 46-42 when Illinois guard Chester Frazier made a 3-pointer only to have it waived off when Pruitt was fouled with 3:49 left in regulation. Illini fans booed as the teams walked to the sidelines during a TV timeout. The referees reviewed the play and overturned the call, which infuriated Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson, and Pruitt hit the free throw to tie it.
Purdue 74, Iowa 55
Carl Landry scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Purdue took a big step toward the NCAA tournament.
Purdue (21-10) was 25-of-50 from the field and hit 6-of-11 3-pointers, with David Teague converting 2-of-3. He finished with 15 points, and Tarrance Crump added 13.
Iowa, which won last year's conference tournament, never found its touch - hitting just 1-of-10 3-pointers and 21-of-51 shots. Adam Haluska, the conference's leading scorer, finished with 14 points but was just 4-of-16. Tyler Smith scored 17 for the Hawkeyes (17-14).
