Two coaching jobs in the South are close to being filled. Sources are telling CBS SportsLine.com that South Florida is taking a hard look at South Alabama's John Pelphrey.
Other candidates on the USF radar are VCU's Anthony Grant and Florida assistant Larry Shyatt, although Grant doesn't reciprocate the Bulls' interest.
At Utah, a long-shot candidate -- but one who has the support of Jon Huntsman, for whom the Utes' arena is named -- is NAIA Westminster coach Tommy Connor. He played point guard for Rick Majerus in the late 1980s.
At Liberty, two serious candidates are South Carolina assistant Rick Duckett and former New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay.
Northern Illinois is looking at former Wisconsin-Stevens Point coach Jack Bennett, who won two Division III national titles there before retiring in 2005. Bennett is the brother of former Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett and the uncle of Washington State's Tony Bennett.
