Thompson signs 6-year deal to stay with Hoyas until 2013

WASHINGTON -- Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson III signed a six-year contract extension Thursday that will keep him with the Hoyas through 2013.

The Hoyas are 72-30 in three years under Thompson, including going 30-7 with a trip to the Final Four last season. It was the team's first berth in the NCAA Tournament semifinals since Thompson's father took Georgetown that far in 1985.

Georgetown also won the Big East regular-season and tournament championships last season.

"This contract extension means he can continue to build upon the program's tradition of success for many years to come," school president Jack DeGioia said.

Before being hired by Georgetown, Thompson was Princeton's head coach from 2000-04.

He inherited a Hoyas team that was 13-15 the year before he arrived.

"I'm extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to do something that I love to do at a place where I love to do it," Thompson said.
