Where in the world are Robin and Brook? Definitely not Houston ...
This was a fairly bold move by coach Rick Barnes and perhaps an ingenious one. It allowed Barnes to save fat-body Dexter Pittman and other bench players for the crucial second half. Pittman utilized his 300 pounds quite well, wearing on one of the Lopez brothers the way a fallen ash tree does on a house.
Again, the Lopez brothers did some damage. Brook had 26 points and 10 rebounds while Robin had six and five. But it was the quietest 32 combined points I've ever seen.
In the second half, when the Texas guards began to explode, Brook had 11 points and just two rebounds while Robin failed to score and had just one.
When Texas went on a 30-11 run to end the game, the Lopez twins were all but invisible.
"They were just a little deeper than us," said Stanford forward Taj Finger. "They kept throwing in guys that could box us out and go and get rebounds and get fouled. Again I think we just ran out of gas and they kept throwing bodies at us. They kept beating us up and just taking it to us."
The twins should inspire fear, but they don't. It was the opposite. After Pittman blocked a Brook attempt, he thumped his chest right in front of Brook (it probably should have been a technical foul). Later, James dunked on Robin's head, drawing the foul.
I've also never witnessed 7-footers get their shots blocked, partially or otherwise, as well as get outright dunked on as much as the Lopez brothers. Dudes need to lift some weights or something. When the Longhorns began to creep ahead and Stanford went inside to Brook, he was blocked by two shorter Texas players. After later getting fouled he threw up a near air-ball hook shot.
That kind of size advantage should lead to Shaq-like inside dominance, like the way Texas dominated the perimeter.
What Stanford does have in abundance is grit. Despite getting smoked by Augustin and his guard cohorts, the Cardinal trailed only by one point 52-51, with about 12 minutes left in the game. Stanford is excellently coached and makes the most of its talent.
What Barnes did when Stanford threatened was wisely turn the game over to Augustin and his guards. Augustin had a steal that made the score 58-51 and in the blink of an eye, after a 3-pointer by guard A.J. Abrams, the lead was back to 10 points.
"At the end these guys did for us what they've done all year," said Barnes of his guards.
James had a fantastic all-around game. It was in fact one of the better performances of the tournament so far (and you'll probably hear little about it). In fact, James won this game for the Longhorns. He can defend almost anyone on the floor and has a nice, slashing offensive game. If you're looking for a sleeper potential Final Four MVP, keep him in mind.
Meanwhile, could someone please locate the Lopez brothers?
Oh, wait, there they are.
They just got dunked on.
Again.
