SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Taj Gibson scored 17 points to lead No. 19 Southern Calirfornia to a 73-46 win against Chattanooga in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Friday night.
Gibson also grabbed 15 rebounds and five blocks for the Trojans (3-1), who played a strong second half to claim the win. Southern Cal was upended by unranked Seton Hall 63-61 on Thursday night.
Dwight Lewis scored 16 points, DeMar DeRozan chipped in 13 and Daniel Hackett had 10 points and nine assists.
Leonard Washington also scored nine points and had 12 rebounds for Southern Cal, which outrebounded Chattanooga 57-32.
Nicchaeus Doaks led the Mocs (0-4) with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. Stephen McDowell chipped in 10.
Southern Cal shot 40.6 percent (26 of 64) form the field for the game compared to a 25.9 percent (15 of 58) for the Mocs. The Trojans outrebounded the Mocs 57-32 in the game, scored 30 points in the paint and hit 18 of their 25 free throws. The Mocs were 10-for-18 from the line.
The Trojans led by 10 points at halftime, but outscored the Mocs 34-17 in the second. The second-half Trojans run included a 15-7 run from the midway point of the period until the end of the game. Chattanooga made just three field goals in the second half, including a 1-for-14 mark from behind the arc. As a team, the Trojans registered 10 blocks. Full story
No. 8 Notre Dame 65, Loyola Marymount 54
LOS ANGELES -- Luke Harangody had 27 points and 17 rebounds, and No. 8 Notre Dame staggered to a victory over winless Loyola Marymount.
Tory Jackson added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Fighting Irish (2-0), who led by only three points with seven minutes remaining before using their superior size and strength to pull away.
Freshman Jarred DuBois led Loyola Marymount (0-4) with 16 points, and fellow freshman Ashley Hamilton added 10 before fouling out with 48.3 seconds to play. Kevin Young had 10 rebounds for the Lions.
First-year Loyola coach Bill Bayno missed the game because of an illness that had caused him to miss practice Wednesday and Thursday. Bayno became ill after the Lions returned home from Iowa State, where they played their first three games last weekend in the World Vision Classic.
No. 14 Tennessee 74, Middle Tennessee 64
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Tyler Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and No. 14 Tennessee beat Middle Tennessee.
Bobby Maze added 12 points for the Vols (3-0) while J.P. Prince and Scotty Hopson had 10 apiece.
Tennessee scheduled games against six opponents from the state of Tennessee this season. Besides Middle Tennessee, the Vols have also beat Chattanooga and Tennessee-Martin so far and will face Belmont, Memphis and Vanderbilt.
Down by only six points, Middle Tennessee (2-1) opened the second half with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 38 with 17:30 left on a long jumper by Nigel Johnson.
No. 17 Miami 70, Southern Mississippi 60
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Dwayne Collins scored 14 points to lead No. 17 Miami to a win over Southern Mississippi in the Paradise Jam opener.
The junior forward also had nine rebounds for the Hurricanes (2-0). Jack McClinton and Lance Hurdle added 13 points apiece, with Hurdle hitting a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give Miami a 36-24 lead at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Junior guard Jeremy Wise led Southern Mississippi (2-1) with 21 points. Courtney Beasley added 14 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 39 percent.
Miami, which entered the season with its highest preseason ranking, shot 44.7 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line.
The Hurricanes will take on No. 2 Connecticut in the next round. Southern Mississippi will face La Salle.
No. 25 Wisconsin 60, Iona 58 (OT)
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Trevon Hughes scored a game-high 21 points to lead No. 25 Wisconsin to a bruising overtime victory over Iona in the Paradise Jam.
The junior guard also had four rebounds for Wisconsin (3-0). Jason Bohannon added 13 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Badgers.
Jonathan Huffman led Iona (1-1) with 15 points. Jermel Jenkins added 11 points for the Gaels.
Wisconsin shot 31.3 percent from the field and 73.5 percent from the free-throw line, where it went 34 times.
