Top 25: Jayhawks fly past Coppin State for 27th home win in row

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Cole Aldrich had a career-high 23 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds to help No. 22 Kansas beat Coppin State 85-53 for its 27th straight home victory.

Brady Morningstar had a career-best 21 points and Sherron Collins had 11 points and a career-high eight assists for the Jayhawks (4-1).

Morningstar hit his first four 3-point attempts as the Jayhawks went on a 34-3 tear in the first half and led by as many as 31 until Rigoberto Sargeant hit a 10-footer for the Eagles' third bucket with 6:15 to go.

Tywain McKee had 17 points and Sargeant had eight points and seven rebounds for Coppin State (1-2), which is playing its first 15 games away from home.

The Eagles trailed 41-17 at halftime but showed some fight in the second half, twice getting as close as 17.

Finding a shooting touch that deserted them in the first half, they sliced the lead to 59-42 on Jordan Lee's bucket with 10:02 to go. That made them 11-for-16 from the floor in the second half after hitting only 6-of-27 in the opening 20 minutes.

Kansas called timeout and appeared to get a tongue-lashing from coach Bill Self. Full story

No. 15 Marquette 73, Northern Iowa 43

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Wesley Matthews scored 17 points and No. 15 Marquette used a 20-0 first-half run to rout Northern Iowa in the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

Playing its first game outside of Milwaukee this season, Marquette (5-0) cruised to victory before a small crowd at the Sears Centre. The Golden Eagles also got 15 points from Lazar Hayward and 13 from Jerel McNeal.

Northern Iowa (3-2) was led by Kwadzo Ahelegbe's 11 points.

After an initial feeling-out period, the Golden Eagles broke it open early with the 20-0 run, using a variety of shots and strong defense. During the spurt, Matthews hit a 3-pointer, Dominic James made two 3s' on either side of a timeout, Jimmy Butler followed in a miss and McNeal found the range on yet another 3-pointer on a pass from James.

No. 20 Villanova 64, Towson 47

PHILADELPHIA -- Scottie Reynolds scored 14 points and Dante Cunningham and Antonio Pena both had 12 as No. 20 Villanova overcame a sluggish start to defeat Towson in the Philly Classic.

Corey Fisher added 11 for the Wildcats (5-0), who will play Rhode Island in Saturday's championship game. Rhode Island earlier advanced by defeating Penn State 77-72.

Junior Hairston scored 11 points for Towson (3-2), which had been off to its best start in nine years entering the game.

Villanova led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Towson whittled the margin to 30-28. The Wildcats took a 33-28 halftime lead on Fisher's 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
