Projecting the Field: Almost there

Updated March 15, 4:20 p.m. ET

Just the Big Ten championship game remains, so here is a nearly final look at the bracket.

There seems to be almost as much excitement about which teams will be the No. 1 seeds as to which teams will be the last at-large teams in the field.

I have the top line as UNC, Louisville, Pitt and UConn, in that order. Duke could possibly take the Huskies' spot, but maybe not. It would have been better for the Blue Devils if they were playing North Carolina. Michigan State blew its chance Saturday in a non-competitive loss to Ohio State. Memphis doesn't have the number and quality of big wins to compete with these other teams for the top line.

At the bottom, USC stole a bid Saturday with a comeback win over Arizona State in the Pac 10 championship. Mississippi State stole one Sunday by beating Tennessee. Creighton is the team coming out of this bracket because of the Bulldogs' win. Some unluckly team, maybe the same one, will come off the committee's board. We'll just never know which one.

Top seed Stephen F. Austin winning the Southland title helped other bubble teams.

Fortunately, unlike last year, the Big Ten game does not appear to have a chance to change the bracket. That is the latest of today's games. That game is the lead-in to the selection show on CBS, so it puts a lot of pressure on the committee when it matters to the bracket, like last year.

This just in from the shameless plug department: CBS College Sports network has a pre-selection show starting a 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday, and a post-selection show beginning at 7 p.m. ET. I will be on both of those shows helping to decipher the hows and whys of what the committee will do, and then what they did.

Reminders

As you go down the bracket and follow the teams from a particular conference, you can assume the seeding will roughly match the order they finished in the conference standings. Non-conference performance can sometimes override that, as well as the conference tournament.

Sometimes a team has to be moved up or down a one from its true seed to follow bracketing rules, especially the one regarding the separation of teams from the same conference. Typically, the more teams a league has in the bracket, the more seed swapping has to be done to make them fit. The committee will also move teams up and down solely to allow teams to play closer to home. You see that kind of thing more often at the bottom of the bracket.

Even though North Carolina is the overall No. 1 seed in this bracket, the opening-round winner was assigned to play Louisville because it is the highest seed at a Friday-Sunday location.

Finally someone who sees the reality of what the Spartans have accomplished so far this year.  You have heard it all so I won't bore you with RPI's, injuries during their key losses and a brain fart or 2 along the way but it is really time to acknowledge what they have accomplished in the most competitive conference in the NCAA.  8 out of 11 teams (73%) in the Big Ten are g ...(more)

7 teams from the Big 10 and two more on the fence? Palm must be on angel dust. Note to Jerry: please step away from the computer and start watching college basketball games.

To give you an idea how horrible the Big 10 is, consider the fact their regular season champion (Michigan State) lost by 35 to Carolina in a Big 10 arena, lost TWICE to Penn State, lost to Northwestern at home, ...(more)

There is no way the Big Ten should get 8 teams into the field. Absolutely no way. The Big Ten vs. the ACC or the Big East gets destroyed (and did in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge).

Additionally, Michigan State, at Ford Field in Detroit, got routed by Carolina by 35! In fact, for the first month of the year, MSU was terribly inconsistent. Only when they got to the Big Te ...(more)

Why all this love for Penn State but Maryland is being predicted as being on the outside looking in:

RPI:  Penn State - 66; Maryland - 62 (advantage Maryland)

SOS:  Penn State - 87; Maryland - 22 (huge advantage Maryland)

Maryland has beaten 3 top 10 teams.  Penn State has beaten 1. (They both beat Michigan State - Maryland actually put a be ...(more)

I usually do not reply to these types of predictions and get mad but seriously, Gophers beat Ohio State and still only have 1 loss. And since you said that these would be the brackets should the season end today, then that just doesn't even make sense. Point made.

Side point: Michigan a 5?

This is where Kansas gets no respect.  KU wins their 5th count them 5th league title.  Stop using the Griffin excuse.  They are the League Champs and not to mention reining NCAA Champs.  They weren't even picked to make the dance.  Oh we were rebuilding.  Well you forgot to tell the players that.  Give them their respect.  After losing to TT I don't expec ...(more)

Syracuse a 6-seed? Come on. This is a team that lost at home to Cleveland State, and hasn't had a single quality win in Big East play. Sure, they beat Memphis, Kansas, and Florida in the non-conference, but all of those were against young teams early in the season. I doubt Syracuse would win any of those games based on how the teams are playing right now. Since conference play started, Syracuse ...(more)

First - I really don't think they have the resume to get in.  They beat two teams that are going to make the field, but one is an auto bid (Northern Iowa).  The other team is projected as one of the last teams in the field, and that was a home win.  Why them over Davidson - seriously?  And don't throw RPI out there at me, because in this instance, that is fuzzy math.&nb ...(more)

Texas is not neccessarily safe as of yet. Although I believe that they ill get in no matter what with all the bubble teams missing opportunities. If Kansas State beats Texas then K-State will be higher on the bubble list. Also if Oklahoma State can win or even get very close to Oklahoma, then Texas will fall even below them. As of right now the order of bubble teams in the big 12 is Texas, Okla ...(more)

I do not wish to lay the jinx on Michigan State, but with the tragic and unfortunate timing of Oklahoma and Pittsburgh's conference tournament bomb-outs, can we finally reward the team that no one seems to have paid any attention to all season long?  I present to you a team that went 26-5 against the sixth most challenging schedule in the nation, racked up a 12-2 record against the RPI top ...(more)

Can you  believe it? Arizona dances again. I had my doubts, but I always thought their resume was better than the other bubble teams. I claimed they were in before the second ASU game. That said, I'm glad I'm smarter than Jerry, Joe, or any other bracketologist that thought the Wildcats didn't deserve a bid. I was amazed that Doug Gottlieb and Greg Anthony agreed with me though. ...(more)

My #1 seeds:  UNC, Pitt, UCONN, Oklahoma. I believe this is how it will play out. In years past, the committee has said that the #1 seeds are all but set in stone going into the weekend, barring some huge early upsets. I think the only way Memphis steals a #1 is if Kansas wins the Big 12, then OU may lose it. Also some talk about Louisville garnering a #1. I don't think so. I think U ...(more)

1) limit the number of teams from any conference to 6 teams.  I mean, come on, if the 6 best teams in the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc can't represent their conferences and get the wins over worse seeds, then another 2-3 teams isnt going to matter.  Those top 6 teams have proven they are the cream of their conference.

2) no team with a conference record under .500 should be cons ...(more)
