Top recruit Henry: 'I'm goin to Kansas and that's final'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After a frantic day that had Kansas fans fretting they might lose a prized recruit, Xavier Henry texted a local radio station late Tuesday night saying he decided to stay with the Jayhawks.

Earlier, the father of Xavier and his brother, C.J. Henry, said there would be a family meeting on Tuesday and that the two might not play at Kansas, after all.

But late Tuesday, Xavier Henry sent a text message to Cory Anderson of the Chris and Cowboy Show on 610 Sports Radio confirming he would not change his mind.

"I'm goin to Kansas and that's final," the text read.

Xavier Henry, a 6-6 guard, is considered one of the most talented players Kansas coach Bill Self has ever recruited. Adding him to a deep and experienced squad which returns almost everyone from the team that reached the NCAA Sweet16 last season would likely make the Jayhawks preseason favorites for the national championship.

Xavier and his older brother, C.J., were headed to Memphis before switching to Kansas in the wake of John Calipari's decision to leave Memphis and coach at Kentucky.

Their father, Carl Henry, said in an interview with 610 on Tuesday that the family was upset with a story in the Kansas City Star on Sunday. The story, the father said, portrayed his sons as being disinterested in attending classes at college.

Henry said he planned to meet Tuesday night with his sons at the family home in Oklahoma City to see if the boys want to go to Kentucky or keep their commitment to Kansas.

"We have a meeting set up tonight where we're going to set down and talk about this whole deal," the elder Henry said.

Asked if there was a chance his sons would not come to Kansas, Henry said, "Yes. I don't know what they're considering. When Coach Self came down, my oldest son, C.J., said, 'No matter what, we're going to Kansas.' But a couple of weeks ago, my youngest son tells me he wants to go to Kentucky, said he's thinking about it."

The extensive story in the Sunday Star indicated the family was mostly interested in preparing an NBA career for the brothers and that Xavier has no interest in school.

"If he didn't have to go to college, he wouldn't do it," Carl Henry was quoted as saying.

When pressed by the interviewers, the elder Henry said there was nothing factually inaccurate in the story.

"The guy who wrote that story kind of betrayed my whole family and kind of made us look bad, like my kids are prima donnas, all I do is talk." he said.

When Calipari left for Kentucky, the brothers switched to Kansas, where their mother, father and aunt all played basketball. Carl Henry said they might have chosen to follow Calipari to his new school but their mother did not want to live in Kentucky.

But he said she no longer feels that way.

"She told Coach Self she's out of it. She don't care where they go," Henry said.

Just another, in what has been a long line, of kids who think they are above the game.  I say if one wants to attend college and play college ball, have those experiences and mature, become an adult per say, then the NCAA and the NBA needs to agree that the player needs to spend 3 years in school before he can join the NBA.  If a kid has no interest in college, and is just going because ...(more)

until tomorrow. Or until the weekend. Or next week. Or next month.
Wouldn't it be interesting if CJ grew a pair and went back to Memphis?
So, the Henrys to UK becomes just another dramatic pause...
I think some enterprising person should quickly start a Henry Reality Show...
How freaking entertaing would that be??
We've got the Henrys and the Stephensons...
Let's move

going to college is supposed to be a stage in a young person's life when they establish some independence and learn more about living away from home.  i mean, they got upset about a newspaper running an article about an interview with the father, who doesn't deny that the guys going to college is all about getting them ready for the NBA.  how about a reality check, it's possible that der ...(more)

The more I think about Xavier Henry coming to Kentucky, the more I wonder how Coach Cal will possibly keep the 7-8 NBA picks happy with one basketball?? I mean Cousins, Wall, Henry, Orton, Patterson, Bledsoe, and possibly a couple others all profile at potential 2010-2012 1st round picks....3-4 of them could be lottery picks next year. Can Coach Cal actually get all these guys to subordi ...(more)

now that XH is staying lets hear the KU faithful praise him for a great decision, and love him up. Can't wait to see him get booed at midnight madness and quit the team, go to Europe and spend his year there. This kid is a head case and will cause trouble in Lawrence all year as will his parents. coach self you should have let him bail you would have been better off. character matters i kept heari ...(more)

This story is ridiculous on many different levels.  Picking a college is not as easy as saying I guess I'll go here or no maybe I'll go there.  Since the Henry's would not be signing a letter of intent then they are suppossed to be treated like regular students.  As regular students the application deadline was months ago not to mention that the deadline for notifying a college t ...(more)

Not often do you see parents this involved in a man's decision to pick a college to play basketball, and even more seldom is there this much drama involved... Carl, get a grip, quit talking to the media about your kids, they're men now, let them handle themselves and make their own choices...

Being a fan of any high-major NCAA college basketball program these days, you are bound to be subject to a late recruiting tiff not so infrequently. It's time again for Kansas fans, but with the cupboard not so bare, does KU need Xavier Henry as bad as Henry needs KU?

This topic wouldn't even be up for debate if Henry simply skipped town before Lance Stephenson reportedly committed to

Does he really think the Kentucky will be number 1 preseason if Henry transfers?  Is he joking?  How can a team that struggled in the NIT last year compete for the National Championship?  I don't care how good of a recruiting class you have, a team full of freshman are not going to make any NIT team a National Championship contender.  Thats just stupid.  If Henry transfers ...(more)

I am for character guys.  If he comes to Kansas and plays for the Jayhawks next year, he will have to earn my respect as a fan.  This is a joke.  The state of Kansas saw Arthur Brown and his (advisor) do this, and lost all respect for Brown.  Hope he fails at Tennessee.  Carl Henry should be de-claimed from Kansas.  Carl Henry is screwing up his sons future and I hope ...(more)

Here is the conversation I guarantee happened in Calapari's office a few weeks ago:

Calapari: Guys...I just got off the phone with Jodie and he's not coming back, so we have an extra scholly. What do we do?
Cronies:  We could always ask one of those guys back that we cut.
Calapari: No...those guys were terrible. They couldn't even get us past the first round of the N

If this happens, yea, it'll be the best class in history, hands down. I've said it before.. but it's kinda like that feeling on Christmas.. where you open all your presents and they're really great.. and you think you're done.. then you see find one more box under the tree.. you thought it had been opened.. but it hasn't.. you just aren't sure if the nametag has your name on it or not. Either way, ...(more)

Is it just me or does anyone else think that UK may struggle in the tournament simply because no one on that team has any meaningful NCAA tournament experience? Its not always the team with the most talent that wins the NCAA tournament, usually its a team that has good leadership from its upperclassman and has at least had a couple of deep tourney runs under its belt. UK has neither of these. Patt ...(more)
