Preseason All-America team: Hang the award on Wall

John Wall is the CBSSports.com Preseason National Player of the Year.

And, yes, I know he hasn't played a college game yet.

But that doesn't matter.

Because preseason accolades should serve as a predictor of things to come, and what's coming is an incredible season from the Kentucky freshman who will lead the Wildcats to the Final Four, at least. Thus, Wall gets the nod. So put him down as the early favorite to become the third freshman in four years to be named the CBSSports.com National Player of the Year, joining Kevin Durant (2007) and Michael Beasley (2008).

"He's chasing it," UK coach John Calipari said. "He's absolutely chasing it."

To expand on that point, Calipari talked about Wall being in the gym at 11 some nights, putting up shots with a manager and leading by example. And then there's this: "John is picking this stuff up quicker than Derrick [Rose] and Tyreke [Evans] did; he's more comfortable in it," Calipari said. "Now he's not all the way there yet, and there will be a learning curve. But he's going to be one of the better players in the country, I would guess."

Me too.

The best, in fact.

And just to make clear what kind of talent we're dealing with, understand that if Wall could've entered last June's NBA Draft, some franchises would've debated whether to take him or Blake Griffin with the No. 1 overall pick. Assuming the Clippers still took Griffin, the Grizzlies would've selected Wall second. And if there were a way to deal Hasheem Thabeet (and his Twitter account) for the rights to Wall right now, I'm confident the Grizz would make that trade and celebrate appropriately.

The guy is that gifted.

And that's why he highlights the CBSSports.com Preseason All-America team.

First team

Guard: John Wall (Kentucky)

Why he's here: Lots of times coaches don't know what they have in a player until the player gets on campus. Sometimes they are pleasantly surprised, other times greatly disappointed. So with that in mind -- and with the knowledge that Calipari has long believed Wall was a special, Rose-like talent -- I asked the first-year UK coach if he had seen anything since Wall enrolled to make him think Wall won't be as special as anticipated. Calipari's response: "No."

Guard: Willie Warren (Oklahoma)

Why he's here: Warren played the role of Blake Griffin's sidekick last season, and he played it well; he was a lottery pick, if he wanted. But Warren instead opted for a sophomore season at OU. He'll keep the Sooners near the top of the Big 12 and prove to be one of the nation's elite scorers.

Forward: Al-Farouq Aminu (Wake Forest)

Why he's here: Aminu averaged 13.8 points and 8.2 rebounds last season despite playing with two -- how to put this delicately? -- ballhogs in Jeff Teague and James Johnson. Those guys are gone. And though it's unclear if Wake Forest can win more without them, there's no doubt Aminu will flourish in their absence.

Forward: Luke Harangody (Notre Dame)

Why he's here: Harangody has averaged a double-double each of the past two years and developed into a Fantasy owner's dream. The losing took a toll last season and cost the forward some of the attention he deserved. But Mike Brey now has a team good enough to make the NCAA tournament, primarily because he's getting one more season from a player good enough to win Big East Player of the Year honors.

Center: Cole Aldrich (Kansas)

Why he's here: Aldrich got 14.9 points and 11.1 rebounds last season while leading KU to a surprising Big 12 title. He didn't have to return to school, but he did. And the byproduct is that Bill Self's Jayhawks are the favorite to win their second national championship in three years despite every key player from the previous title team (except for Sherron Collins) having moved on.

Thirty other players under consideration

None on the first team.

None on the second team.

Two (including Kalin Lucas, a possible lottery pick, or at least a top 15) in the 3rd Team All-American?

The Big 10 proved it last year, the year before and will prove it again, there are big time players, coaches, and teams in this conference.

How disappointing to see Luke Harongody on 1st

Ok i get it Parish! You think John Wall is gonna be good. Good for you! I know he will be good he's an elite player. but what's the Deal with all the Players from KY so high on your list? You haven't seen them play!! Im not saying they won't be good i think they are an excellent team but you give them too much credit for nothing. these teams will have thier problems as well they aren't gonna ...(more)

Let me see not even of a mention of Nic Wise of Arizona? A true Senior, now being coached by a true point guard in Sean Miller, that has now becomes the focus of Arizona's offense, who gets to lead this young team on his back into a very young PAC 10 that really has no dominate players...which means Wise has a legitimate shot at PAC 10 player of the year candidacy...and he can't even scratch your ...(more)

So I was looking through these lists and I see that Turner is only listed on the "others considered" list while Manny Harris is listed on the 3rd team. Nothing against Manny Harris, but I watched 30+ Big Ten games last year that Ohio State and Michigan were involved in and in every single game Turner had more of an impact for his team than did Harris.

Turner scored, rebounded,

We all know that this 2009 class is full of very talented freshman and like Gary Parrish says, "If the NBA draft were tomorrow John Wall would be one of the top picks".  Yes, that may be entirely true, but there are also many other HS recruits that were also very touted in the same manner as John Wall that didn't pan out.  There is long laundary list.

We all know abo

Gary I for one (and some of the few it seems on here) that usually is in agreement with your articles. However I have a problem picking an unproven freshman as the preseason National Player of the Year. Wall might end up being as good as advetised (or marginally as good as he is being advertised as being the one of the best incoming players ever), but that is yet to be seen. Playing against

He's such a legit contender for this too. He runs the Illinois offense in the post. Quit giving Kentucky and Kansas all these props before the season even starts.

Gary, I'm not sure I entirely agree with your pick at small foward.  Aminu is a fantastic player and he'll be asked to play the SF at the next level (like he has with WF), but his outside game leaves a LOT to be desired.  Put five of him on the court at one time and your offense suddenly gets very one-dimensional.

Singler is a great choice, and although he played more at th ...(more)

How are you going to keep Jujuan Johnson off of the list, easliy the most improved player of the year last year, and wait til this year, the sky is the limit for this kid, your list is a joke preseason or not, my 5 year old could pick a better list.

It seems to me that every major sports news outlet is all over Kentucky's jock this year.  They do seem to me to be a sexy pick to at least make the final four, but allow me to remind all of you about a few things.  One, Calipari is a good coach and a good recruiter.  I'll give you that.  But, how often does a head coach take a team that was only mediocre in 08-09, to the final ...(more)

Gary,
You can't sing from the mountaintops how good John Wall is going to be.  Keep the Kentucky blue media train rolling with hugs and kisses for Coach Calipari and his mighty Wildcats.  Just answer me this one.  How is Coach Cal's Kentucky team going to win it all when none of his teams ever learn to shoot free throws?

Signed,

You act it you had to dig down deep in your shallow bank to pick Durant and Beasley as Freshman of the year. C'mon man!!! A deaf and blind writer could have saw and heard that coming. You want credit for that, SCRUB please. That's like after the NBA season, you taking credit for picking LeBron as the MVP. If your job requires stating the obvious, you need a promotion ASAP.

Your guess is as good as anyones for who will be all american.
But why doesn't cbs provide links from this article to your picks from previous years?  Cbs does have archives, no? You talk about your Kevin Durant pick a couple years back, but who here remembers all of your prior picks besides you.

Gary, I'm curious as to why Deonta Vaughn didn't even garner a spot in the "Others Considered" section. His stat line is impressive, averaging around 15 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds a game, to go along with a steal or two, but considering the fact that he was playing out of position all of last season, they are even more impressive. This year, Vaughn will not have to play point guard ...(more)
