Programs on the Rise: Arizona heading back to roaring '90s

Presented by Epson

Lute Olson announced he was taking an indefinite leave of absence in November 2007.

Arizona spent the subsequent 17 months unsettled.

The Wildcats played one season under Kevin O'Neil, the next under Russ Pennell. And though both men snuck into the NCAA tournament (as a No. 10 seed in 2008 and No. 12 seed in 2009), neither team looked nor felt nor played like the Arizona program that rose to prominence under Olson, all of which put a tremendous amount of pressure on athletic director Jim Livengood.

He had to hit a home run with Olson's permanent replacement.

He could not mess up.

Lucky for him, Tim Floyd rejected his overtures -- Seriously, how lucky was that? -- and remained at Southern California (for a couple of months, at least). Countless other coaches also passed on the opportunity, forcing Livengood to look to Xavier and make a fantastic hire.

Mark my words: Sean Miller will kill it at Arizona.

It won't happen this year; the roster is down because of the uncertainty. But Miller has already secured commitments from five Top 100 prospects -- including in-state standout Daniel Bejarano -- in his six months on the job, meaning he's accumulating the kind of talent it'll take to compete annually with UCLA's Ben Howland. Consequently, the Wildcats will, before long, be back doing what the Wildcats have been doing for decades. And that's why Arizona highlights the CBSSports.com List of Programs on the Rise.

Five Programs on the Rise

(programs listed in alphabetical order)

Arizona

Why it's here: The key to any rebuilding project is recruiting, and Miller (like I mentioned already) is succeeding in that aspect of the job. Beyond that, he's restored confidence to a program that will challenge for Pac-10 titles even if this season might be tough.

California

Why it's here: The Bears made the NCAA tournament only once in Ben Braun's final five seasons, which is why Braun is no longer the Bears' coach. Mike Montgomery replaced him, led Cal to the NCAA tournament last season, won 22 games and has his team ranked 20th in the preseason Top 25 (and one). What's even better is that recruiting is going well; Cal already has commitments from three prospects ranked among the Top 100 of Scout.com's Class of 2010 rankings.

Cincinnati

Why it's here: Mick Cronin inherited a mess at Cincinnati, and it has taken a while to pull out of it. Various injuries -- Mike Williams missed the 2007-08 season; Cashmere Wright missed the 2008-09 season -- have complicated manners. But Cronin enters his fourth season with a roster talented enough to return the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament provided the "Lance Stephenson Experiment" doesn't blow up.

Kentucky

Why it's here: UK pushed Billy Gillispie out in March, hired John Calipari a few days later, and the Wildcats have been rolling ever since. Calipari convinced Patrick Patterson to return to school, enrolled six Class of 2009 prospects -- including five-star recruits John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins -- and rejuvenated the Wildcats' large and wacky fan base. Simply put, he took an NIT roster and reshaped it into a roster capable of winning a national title this season. There aren't many men who could accomplish such a feat.

Minnesota

Why it's here: I was skeptical when Minnesota tossed a life line to Tubby Smith and pulled him out of Kentucky, if only because I didn't believe a man who was struggling to recruit at UK would be successful recruiting at Minnesota. Clearly, I was wrong. Smith secured two Top 35 prospects from the Class of 2009 who should help Minnesota make the NCAA tournament for the second successive season, this after making the NCAA tournament only once in the previous nine years.

Here is another program on the rise. I believe thast we have finally extinguished the last remaining embers of the Tarkanian wildfires that dam neared burned the basketball program and Fresno State to the ground. Cleveland now has his slate of full scholarships and he drafts not just strictly for talent like tark did, but also are the kids somewhat well behaved instead some of the wild u ...(more)

Donnie Jones who sat on Florida's bench for 10 years and won two rings under Donovan has started to build a program at Marshall. Once a football school, it looks like basketball will be the draw the next few years. Jones has been able to recruit Damier Pitts and Hassan Whiteside (top 15 in their positions) in back to back years which are big "gets" for the type of program Marshall has ha ...(more)

OK, I hear the snickers, but think about it, Minnesota being on this list is not a shock. Tubby turned Tulsa into a BCS coaching development ground during the 90's and early 2000's. Prior to him, Nolan Richardson was most famous Tulsa coach (and fellow National Championship coach). He made underachieving Georgia a NCAA tourney star in two years at Georgia, and won a NCAA championship at UK. Grante ...(more)

Michigan is a team on the rise and looks to be a really good group this year lead by Manny and Sims all the other teams I can see but how can you leave out the wolverines?

When the kids that are juniors now came into the Big Ten a lot of people said that these kids would be something in a few years. Well it's a few years and it appears they were right. An abnormally high number of these kids seemed to be the elite type of players that can elevate their programs a step or two. I am not sure if the other big conferences saw the same type of talent infusion that year, ...(more)

Now, it may not be so apparant this season, but Mizzou is definetly a program that's on the rise. Now that Mike Anderson has gotten a full roster of HIS players, the sky's the limit for this Tiger team. In fact, Missouri is pretty much in the same boat as Minnesota. A team that had made its first NCAA appearance in quite some time. Nobody is giving Missouri any respect though, because we don't hav ...(more)

Gary,

I think that you are right on with this article. I know that we disagreed with the National POY, but this article was dead on some of the teams coming on this year. Maybe Illinois should have been included, maybe not. Good job though. What I am more interested in what you list as teams on the decline. Your view of who is going downhill (other than of course USC) will be interest

I am a die-hard Purdue fan, but you can't overlook Indiana as a program on the rise.  Tom Crean is a fantastic coach and will recruit very well at Indiana.  Look at the Rivals 150 list and how many have commited to Bloomington.

Even though some schools did not make Gary's Top 5 list doesn't mean there aren't other schools doing what needs to be done to turn their programs around.  I always thought Tubby Smith and Minnesota was the perfect fit.  A guy who gets run-off from a "BlueBlood" program like that isn't just going to fold everything up and not compete again.  He is doing exactly what he ...(more)

Since the 2005 Final 4, the Illini haven't gone past the 2nd rd. of the NCAA tournament and missed the tournament back in 2008, but the Illini are rearing to make another long streak of NCAA tournament appearances with great recruiting class this year coupled with even better recruiting classes in the next 2-3 years.

The Illini will be a mainstay in the top 25 and will be making thei

Mark my words: Sean Miller will kill it at Arizona.

It won't happen this year; the roster is down because of the uncertainty.

Since when did hiring a coach automatically mean a team is on the rise.  With that kind of reasoning is that- then teams who retained their coaches are obviously on the decline, and atleast 25 t ...(more)

You said it.  Xavier is doing it.  Pete Gillen, Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, Sean Miller and now Chris Mack.  Mack will have to prove himself, but his four predecessors all advanced the Xavier program a little further than his predecessor.

He had 5 choices, lay off.  There are over 100 programs out there and none of this matters.  It's guessing and doesn't mean anything in the polls.  The NCAA tourny committe isn't going to refer back to this, calm down.

Thanks to everyone giving notice to Pac-10 schools. Please keep looking past Oregon State and we'll see you in the post-season again.
