Hampton captain Smalling dies in accidental shooting

HAMPTON, Va. -- A Hampton University basketball player has died from what police call an accidental shooting outside a nightclub.

Theo Smalling of Tampa, Fla., died Monday night, according to a university statement Tuesday.

Police said the 22-year-old team captain was shot in the abdomen early Saturday in the parking lot of a nightclub after another man mishandled a firearm.

Police have charged 21-year-old Dominique Devon Smith with reckless handling of a firearm. They could not say if he has an attorney. Police are awaiting autopsy results.

Hampton basketball coach Ed Joyner called Smalling's death a "devastating loss." University president William R. Harvey described him as a "model" student-athlete.

A campus memorial in Smalling's memory was planned Thursday night.

Wow, what an incredibly awesome idea.  Let's hang out at a nightclub until the wee hours on Saturday morning, then go play with guns.

Before any pro-gun extremist get on here preaching about 2nd amendment rights, let it be known that I also agree with the 2nd amendment (yes, also the "well-regulated" part).  I, however, don't agree with stupidity.  If people used more com

To the guy who did the shooting:  If you don't feel safe enough to go to the 'club without your piece, maybe you need to find a different club.  You're an idiot and you need to be punished just like the other idiots who kill people.
