Knight says he won't attend Indiana Hall of Fame induction

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Former Indiana coach Bob Knight will not attend next week's induction into the athletic department's hall of fame.

Athletic director Fred Glass said Thursday that Knight contacted him directly to decline the invitation. Glass said Knight was concerned that the interest in him would be a distraction from the other six inductees.

All living members of the 2009 Hall of Fame class, except Knight, are expected to attend in person.

The General won a school-record 662 games and three national championships at Indiana before being fired by then university president Myles Brand in September 2000. Knight retired in 2008 with the most wins (902) of any coach in Division I men's basketball.

Who knows if he should have been fired.  Yes he did some outlandish things.  Noone complained when he was winning championships.  Also, he is a fiery coach and that works for him.  The real problem here was they tried to tame a lion and you can't do that.  I have a pretty good notion that is why he started to lose it on people.  If they had left him alone, who know ...(more)

Is inviting Bobby Knight into a long overdue (Hall Of Fame) Induction supposed to make in state recruiting easier? Why is it that since Knights departure Indiana's top recruits have all but disappeared? Hell, Lawerence North is a breeding ground for the future of the Louisville baketball program.

I.U. made a big mistake by letting Bobby Knight go. Now they want to make amends by

"I think before coach Knight ever goes there, people at Indiana should think about what happened since he left (in 2000) and celebrate him instead of taking down the things he did,'' Krzyzewski said. "Over three decades, he represented that school, he won championships and produced great young men. That record is not talked about. You can't just say you're in the Hall of ...(more)

yes Robert Montgomery Knight has danced to his own tune for many years. Mr Knight had Miles Brant trying to get him off I ndianas campus for a lot of years and even with him trying tocut him off at the knees every year Indiana was a winning program. All the presidents at every major NCAA school wish they had what Bob Knight brought to the court every night a quality program without the NCAA lookin ...(more)

why is their such a double standard for this guy?  For a guy thats so hot on discipline, then why can he follow simple rules from his superiors.  I mean he had the thing at indiana with the late Miles Brand.  Then he goes to Texas Tech and laces his boss with profanity  at a local grocery store.  He choked Neil Reed, he kicked his own son, He hit the late ...(more)

Too funny.  This dude is a dinosaur.  He is what America has become.  A bunch of out of touch people who are unable to adapt to a new breed of athlete or a newer, more diverse country.  He got fired because he couldn't cope.  Indiana needs to deal with it and move on.

Bobby Knight was Indiana. He was bigger than the institution, and bigger than the state itself. He put Indiana sports on the map. For thirty years you could ask anybody in America about sports in Indiana, and the first and only thing they know is "Indiana basketball" and "Bobby Knight". Coach Knight was around before the movie "Hoosiers". Knight was responsible for es ...(more)

Although Iam not a Knight fan (and he could give a crap who likes him),  Indiana could have and should have handled the whole situation and situations much more professionally.  I for one think he should have told them to kiss his butt, but he has more class than I do.

No surprise here. Indiana justifiably fired Knight for his boorish behavior. And he's still suing the school.

I would not go to the IU campus, either.  Last time Knight was in Bloomington, Indiana, he said "When my life is over, and my time on earth has passed, I want they should bury me upside down, and my critics can kiss my ass."

Bobby Knight has never been man enough to ever admit he was wrong. About anything! It was a great call on his part not to attend because he was a cancer that doesn't need to return. The "ghost" of Knight is much easier to digest than the guy himself.

Even if the firing was justified...which it was...hater's have to respect knight on this one.  Sadly, he's correct...if he shows up all the focus will be on him...the media won't pay this any mind without him and the honorees can have their evening....if he shows....then the whole national media chirps in and the others get a spectacle rather than a well deserved honor.

It is not surprising to hear coach Knight will not be attending.  He was kicked to the curb after a punk "blew the whistle" on him.  I wouldn't be surprised if Miles Brand cooked the whole thing up.  They wanted Knight out almost 10 years ago (a damned shame in my book) and got their way.  It is a testament of how this country has went from a world power by kicking ass into a b ...(more)
