NCAA benches WVU freshman 20 games over amateurism rule

Presented by Epson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The NCAA has benched West Virginia freshman forward Deniz Kilicli for the first 20 games of the season after determining he violated an amateurism rule.

West Virginia said Friday that the NCAA determined Kilicli played on a Turkish team during the 2007-08 season that included a professional player, which isn't allowed under NCAA rules.

Kilicli, a native of Istanbul, attended Mountain State Academy in Beckley in 2008-09.

Coach Bob Huggins declined to comment on the NCAA ruling.

No. 8 West Virginia opens exhibition play on Nov. 8 against Mountain State.

..the ground.

So let me get this straight, Ive been reading the Wall vs. Kilicli debates and we somehow are arguing that Wall's suspension is fair as well as Kilicli's suspension is fair for the crimes committed.

We have a foreign born amateur player, treated as such, accused of playing with a professional--which Im sure happens quite often--and there is no documentation

I have concluded that the NCAA needs to rethink some of there rules.  This is a ridiculous reason to suspend someone 20 games in the season.  I am sure that the kid didn't even know that it was a violation to play with a foreign pro basketball player.  If the NCAA wants everyone to stop going on about how riduculous there rules are(some at least) then maybe they could ...(more)

Now each player on a team overseas has to interview each player on his club to find out what everyone is getting paid.  This is insane.  The NCAA is relying on the personal investiagtion skills of a teenager to determine whether he's going to stay eligible or not.

If the player in question received no benefits from the player getting paid and didn't get paid himself, the NCA

Can you make your double standards anymore obvious??  Deniz gets 20 games, the same day Wall gets only 2??  I know it's not quite the same situation, but UCLA's Dragovic's situation was the same, and I know he didn't nearly get 20 games.  Bottom line is U$C's basketball and football programs have had more violations than pretty much all the other D1 programs combined, and yet the ...(more)

If Kilicli played for Kentucky, the NCAA would okayed a pay raise.
