Kentucky guard Wall cleared, must sit out two games

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky point guard John Wall has been cleared to play by the NCAA.

The school announced Friday that the 6-foot-4 freshman must sit out two games and repay almost $800 in expenses incurred during unofficial visits to schools during his junior year at Word of God Christian Academy.

Wall's status had been up in the air as the NCAA investigated the relationship between Wall and Brian Clifton, his former AAU coach. Clifton was a certified agent for a period during Wall's recruitment, and the NCAA looked into whether Wall accepted any illegal benefits from Clifton during that time.

Wall will miss an exhibition game against Campbellsville on Monday and the season-opener against Morehead State on Nov. 13.

"I'm grateful to have this decision behind me," Wall said in a statement.

Wall was considered one of the top prospects in the country when he signed with the Wildcats, who are ranked fourth in the preseason Top 25. The school had been working with the NCAA for several months to clear up his status.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said he was "appreciative" of the NCAA's willingness to listen while coach John Calipari added he was happy the situation had been resolved.

Wall will be able to play in Kentucky's exhibition game against Clarion on Nov. 6, and will be eligible to make his regular-season debut against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 16.

SUCK IT!!! I have spent the last week reading about how Wall should NEVER play, how he accepted MAJOR benefits, how Coach Cal had a hand in this (despite it happening under Billy Clyde)....well you can just SUCK IT!! Wall has to repay $728.....THAT IS ALL!!!!! Of, he has to sit out a preseason game, AND the home opener.....and then the rest of the country will get to see why this kid has been chos ...(more)

Everyone outside UK fan base just can not stand it that we will be on top again soon. So Kiss our Wilcat butts! Look into any big time program and you will digg up something. Especially Duke, UNC, Kansas ETC..........How do they get all these superstar recruits year after year and no one questions them.

I wonder if this 6'4" phenom, that appears to be dumb as shiites, actually passed the UK entrance exams. Breaking and entering is on his record. Talking to questionable coaches / agents and receiving $800 is on his resume'.

Both infractions are assinine.

So, how did he pass the entrance exams? That's right, Coach Cal is now at the helm.

I like it when the bottom feeders end up ...(more)

Whether or not you think Wall is tainted or Calipari is a a sleazy recruiter is not relevant to the real problem at hand.

The real problem is the Draconian rule book that the NCAA tries to enforce.  Step back and think of this logically.  For Wall to have stayed clear of the minor infraction he was accused of, he would have had to interview his former AAU coach and ask him a

I'm not defending or scolding Coach Calipari on anything...  But I know where he's coming from... The guy recruits the best of the best, and its typical that the most highly recruited teenagers in the country come with a little bit of drama and possible infractions.  Those infractions will often have absolutely nothing to do with the university and usually not even that particu ...(more)

And here I thought it would academics that would create the problems for Wall.  Little did I know that he has the same problems as his new coach; understanding what the rules are.  Then again, we're talking UK.  Academics shouldn't be a problem as long as you can identify the meaning of the three colors on a traffic light.

Apparently rules were broken. So, the NCAA is making it seem like it's punishing Kentucky and Wall, but obviously it is not...

Sitting out an exhibition game, really??

Is this supposed to deter anything?

It's nice to see that Kentucky mishaps can be "fixed" before the season is played, and everyone can be exonerated while little old Memphis, who wasn't even at fault, gets the real serious punishments.  Kentucky fans are jokes to defend what happened.  it's amazing how blind any "enlightened" fan can become when they get a good coach or have a good team.  so pathetic.

I'm sure Barnhart was also "appreciative" that the NCAA fell for Kentucky's "magic fax" BS story that allowed Randolph Morris to become immediately eligible in mid-season a few years ago. Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings (whose team was UK's next opponent at the time) was so livid with the NCAA's decision that he refused to publicly comment on it and ha ...(more)
