Division II Le Moyne upsets Syracuse in exhibition game

Presented by Epson

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Christopher Johnson and Laurence Ekperigin hooted and hollered as they skipped off Jim Boeheim Court, huge smiles creasing their faces and seemingly as stunned as the Syracuse Orange at what had just transpired.

Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.

"We've got an experienced group," Le Moyne head coach Steve Evans said. "Did we ever think that a day like this would happen? Probably not. But we put together a game plan. We didn't want to play Syracuse's way. We wanted to play our way. It was just one of those days for Le Moyne basketball. The kids will remember this forever."

Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, hit a 3 from the left corner to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left.

Then Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, which came from the left side after Syracuse's Kris Joseph backed off defensively.

"We were sort of out of whack a little bit," Christopher Johnson said. "Everyone was rushing. But as soon as I caught the ball, I saw an opening and I just let it fly. Luckily, it went in."

After Wes Johnson missed a 3, Can Ozkaner added a free throw with 1.3 seconds left for Le Moyne and Syracuse had its first preseason exhibition loss since a setback against the Harlem Globetrotters six years ago.

"Le Moyne really outplayed us from the beginning of the game to the end," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "They [the Orange] are very, very young mentally. They really have got to grow up. We couldn't stop them on the dribble. That's something we've been looking at in practice."

Ekperigin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Damani Corbin had 11 points and five assists, and Kevin Roth added 10 points for Le Moyne, which outscored Syracuse 42-30 in the paint.

Andy Rautins had 13 points and Rick Jackson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Orange, who led 47-37 early in the second half.

But the Dolphins, who play across town, never let down. Three 3s by Christopher Johnson helped narrow the gap and a three-point play by Ekperigin gave Le Moyne a 56-55 lead with 8:41 remaining.

The Dolphins, who repeatedly took advantage of Syracuse's man-to-man defense with drives and back-door cuts, went up 76-71 after Ekperigin converted a lob from Corbin with 57.9 seconds left and held on.

"It's very disappointing," said Wes Johnson, in his first season after transferring from Iowa State. "Hopefully, we can learn from this and move in the right direction." "It's just embarrassing the way we played," said Rautins, born and raised in Syracuse. "It's embarrassing to ourselves and our fans. It wasn't luck that they won. They came out and beat us fair and square."

Evans said he wasn't really looking forward to reading and watching the news on Wednesday.

"I feel bad that the story tomorrow will be, 'What's wrong with Syracuse basketball?' I don't think there's anything wrong," he said. "They've got tremendous players. It's an exhibition game. They're young. They're going to be terrific."

Syracuse is preseason ranked about 32 in most polls/magazines (includidng the AP poll.)  Dayton is ranked 21st, so if this was Dayton who lost an exhibition game, would we be reading about it?  Probably not.
Syracuse lost Flynn, Harris & Devo, and gained some new players as well.  I think over some time with good coaching, this team can finish the year around 20-25th.

I am not trying to stir anything up especially since I just saw the highlights of this game.  But, when the final horn sounded, it appeared that most of the Syracuse players on the bench just walked away and weren't interested in shaking hands.  Again, I only saw a snippet, but I was wondering if there was actually the standard handshake afterwards.  I know it is an exhibition, so I ...(more)

This type of stunner happens more than you think and since there is parity in college sports, it wll happen even more.  You may not remember but several years ago an NAIA team from Alva, Oklahoma (Northwestern Oklahoma State University) went to Waco, Texas and beat Baylor (an NCAA Division I school).  Now I know Baylor was absolutely horrible way back then, but still, an NAIA t ...(more)

Going to have to defend Syracuse alittle here! First off if coach Behiom ??? treats these games like Pitino does he puts guys who he know wont play much or in certain postions to test them. Last week Uofl hosted naia #7th Georgetown College and for most of the game it was tied. Louisville ended up winning by 12. It would be easy for a coach to his starters out there and say lets blow them out , bu ...(more)

I watched this game and if it wasnt for Wes Johnson SU would have been run out of the Gym. Congrats to Lemoyne they really do have some talent and they should do well in their conference. SU has got to alot of work to do if they are going to be competitve in the Big East. I watched this game from beginning to end and the intensity was not there , the defense looked horrible both the man to man and ...(more)

Was this a blip on the screen or a sign of things to come?

This really could happen to anyone, so no one in Cuse nation should jump off any bridges.  I would look to see how the Orange play over their next 5 or so games.  i don't know who they play but i would be willing to bet they are winnable games, if Cuse wins each by 20 i would forget about last nights game.&

Syracuse is known for its infrequent flyer miles in it's non-con schedule. Well, they didn't even have to leave home to get 'cupcaked' by little ole LeMoyne.

Congratulations to LeMoyne. It will most likely be the highlight of their college basketball careers.

As Coach Larranaga of George Mason said in a quote in a pre-season magazine a couple of years ago, it went something l

I know you will expect me to gloat, being a Gtown fan. But I watched this game on Fox sports NY, and Lemoyne is a very talented team. They had 5 guys that could play at most D1 schools. Losing an exhibition like this is going to help Cuse in the long run. Better to do it now than when it counts. I am sure Boeheim will make practice tomorrow a living hell.

To lose a game that doesn't count at all, where even the players know that it wasn't about talent but about focus and effort, and where the players feel the sting of embarrassment?  This is something Boeheim can use throughout the season to keep his team focused on the task at hand.  This will make Syracuse a very dangerous team.

He will use this game as a motivational tool, which will help the team in the long run.  I'm sure this game will be brought up many times throughout the season.

And WTF**** to the SU Orange

Anuaku and Jackson better concentrate more on BOXING OUT and HUSTLING for rebounds than posturing and posing for the cameras.

THis is type of outcome only highlights the unacceptable low level of intensity and lack of heart.

I already miss devo.....

This is all I have heard about between the facebook posts, media, etc.... THIS WAS AN EXHIBITION! Does anyone remember the last really bad exhibition loss that SU had? Oh yeah, the year they won the national title! These games are glorified practices! Get over it. Remember how the Detroit Lions went 4-0 last pre-season? Yeah, that worked out well for them huh? They werent called the 4-16 Lion ...(more)

Just saw the replay...Whats up with the clock. The last 1.9 seconds is in super slowmo while the live play is going on. If the clock malfunctioned, there is no way they get that shot off in time.

its just a practice game, the same thing happened to michigan state either last year or the year before when they lost to grand valley state in a practice game and msu still had a good season. theres really no reason to worry yet, when they get their head on straight they will be a contender again this year.
