Duke guard Smith slapped with two-game suspension

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke guard Nolan Smith will sit out two games because he played in an unsanctioned summer league.

Smith said Tuesday night after the Blue Devils' 84-48 exhibition victory over Findlay that he was suspended because he played a game with overseas players and professionals over the summer near his hometown of Washington, D.C.

The junior will miss the opener against North Carolina-Greensboro on Nov. 13 and a game three nights later against Coastal Carolina. He didn't play in the first half against Findlay so his teammates could adjust to playing without him.

The Blue Devils already have a thin backcourt -- Smith and senior Jon Scheyer are the only returning guards with significant experience. Smith averaged 8.4 points last season.

Will the NCAA do anything, NOPE.  So he will sit out for games against someone like Md Eastern Shore or North Carolina Bible School.....  Just another reason why Duke is a joke.

This was a minor infraction at best and was dealt with accordingly. I am a Tar Heel so I have no love for Dook, but some of you people are going overboard about this. If Dook is cheating then put a name to it and just don't make statements that you can't back up.

The NCAA has these rules for a reason, and I think it's to prevent any student-athlete from unfairly gaining an advantage.  Now, I don't think Nolan gained any advantage and I don't think he intentionally broke the rules or lied about it, which is why the minor punishment is fitting.  However, since he did break the rules, it wouldn't be fair to not punish him.  As it is, the punish ...(more)

how else do you describe it when the NCAA finally finds fault with something at dUKe?

Welcome to the real world, dUKies, your 20 year party of skirting NCAA rules may finally be over.

Too bad....Urban would probably fly him first class to Paris for a fine French cuisine for the night then back for that sort of outlandish behavior.

If this is a self-imposed sanction, I take no issue with a 2 game suspension.  My probelm is when the NCAA shows favoritism to the major names while dumping on the smaller schoools .. to send a message???   I don't believe that is the case here.

So this kid gets 2 games for playing with professional players from overseas and WVU's Deniz Kilicli gets 20 games because he played on a club team that had a professional on it in turkey. Thats the biggest load of BS i have ever heard.

(POLL) Does Duke get preferential treatment from Refs during games and/or the NCAA w/ regard to recruiting violations?
