Five for Friday: Mazzulla needs maps to public restrooms

By | CBSSports.com Senior Writer

West Virginia has players urinating in public.

So does my neighborhood.

Let's do Five for Friday.

1. Have you ever pulled a Joe Mazzulla?

If you mean frustrate DeMarcus Cousins in the Elite Eight, the answer is no. But if the question is about urinating in public, well, I grew up in Mississippi, and urinating in public is part of the deal. So it's hard to get worked up about police citing Mazzulla and West Virginia teammate Dalton Pepper for relieving themselves in downtown Morgantown this week.

Urinating in public is among the tamest illegal things a college guy can do, and anybody truly disturbed by it is probably a little uptight. That said, it's never a good thing when a player consistently creates headlines that have nothing to do with basketball. That's why Bob Huggins must be frustrated with Mazzulla, at least, because the scrappy guard has already been suspended once in his college career for two arrests in a span of nine months.

So am I saying Mazzulla was wrong to pee in public?

No.

(Again, we've all done it.)

I'm just saying he was wrong to get caught, and that Huggins needs Mazzulla to stop appearing in police reports. If that requires him to hold it, he should hold it. Or at least hold it until the cops aren't around.

2. Will Mike Rice be running the Big East in three years?

Not sure I would go that far. But there's no denying the first-year Rutgers coach has been killing it on the recruiting front. Rice already has four commitments from the Class of 2011, and three of them -- Myles Mack, Kadeem Jack and Derrick Randall -- are considered top 100 national prospects. Though it's important to remember this remains a massive rebuilding job, and that the Big East is not the type of league where it's simple to rebuild, I wouldn't blame Rutgers fans for being overly excited.

Or future Rutgers players, for that matter.

"The program is skyrocketing as we speak," Mack told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I'm really liking that."

3. Does all this make Rice the nation's best hire from this past offseason?

Way too early to proclaim such a thing.

But has he had the biggest impact to date?

Yes, I think so.

4. I've seen four different Class of 2011 prospects ranked No. 1 nationally. Who's the best?

There are some really good players at the top of the class but none who project as certain stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, and John Wall at the same stage. That's why there are so many different top-ranked prospects, because there isn't one who obviously stands above all others.

Me?

I remain partial to Mike Gilchrist.

I don't know that he'll be the best pro of the group, but I just love everything about him -- his versatility, how consistently hard he plays, the way his mother has raised him to be a humble, well-rounded young man. It's impossible to not root for the kid (unless you're a Louisville fan, of course). So if forced to choose, I guess I would pick Gilchrist. But I freely admit some of my opinion is based on me liking what he and his mother stand for and wanting to reward them (as opposed to punish them) for shutting down a ridiculous travel schedule before the end of the July recruiting period so that Gilchrist could -- you're not going to believe this -- be a "normal" kid.

Either way, let me give you a full top five (in alphabetical order):

 Anthony Davis (Kentucky)
 Mike Gilchrist (Kentucky)
 Quincy Miller (uncommitted)
 Austin Rivers (uncommitted)
 Adonis Thomas (uncommitted)

5. So three of your top five are uncommitted. Where will they sign?

I've never fancied myself a recruiting analyst, but I talk to a lot of people who do. After conversations with them and staffs involved in every recruitment, my prediction would be that Miller ultimately plays for Louisville, Rivers for Duke and Thomas for Memphis. As always, if I'm correct I'll mention this again. If not, let's forget it ever happened.
