Could Mike Brey be going home?
Maryland certainly hopes so.
According to several sources with knowledge of the situation, Brey is expected to be targeted as the potential successor for Gary Williams, who announced his resignation as the school's college basketball coach Thursday.
Brey has deep roots in the D.C. area from his days as a player and assistant to the legendary Morgan Wooten at DeMatha Catholic. The Bethesda, Md., native also has strong ACC ties from being an assistant at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski.
Brey previously served as coach of the University of Delaware before becoming coach at Notre Dame in 2000.
The Irish have reached new heights under Brey, who has been named Big East Coach of the Year in three of the past five seasons, but an opportunity to return to the ACC and the Mid-Atlantic region will be an awfully tough proposition to turn down if it's offered.
Notre Dame lost to Florida State this past season in the third round of the NCAA tournament.
