San Diego State, Georgetown potential teams for game on USS Midway

CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN DIEGO -- An aircraft carrier on San Diego Bay will host a college basketball game on Nov. 9.

It will be a different flat top and different teams than last November, when North Carolina beat Michigan State in the Carrier Classic on the USS Carl Vinson, with President Barack Obama watching from courtside.

Syndicus Entertainment, in partnership with the San Diego Sports Commission, announced plans Friday for the Battle on the Midway on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum. The Midway has been berthed on San Diego Bay since 2004.

San Diego State and Georgetown are among the teams that have been invited. An announcement confirming the participants isn't expected until after the NCAA tournament.

The Battle on the Midway will be produced by a different group than the one that ran the Carrier Classic. Morale Entertainment Foundation announced last month that it will move the Carrier Classic out of San Diego for 2012 because no active Navy ship was available. That game appears to be headed for the USS Yorktown museum in Charleston, S.C.

Morale Entertainment has said it hopes to return to San Diego in 2013 if an active carrier is available.

The Battle on the Midway game will be part of a Veterans Day weekend celebration on the Midway.

On Nov. 11, Barry Zito's foundation, Strikeouts for Troops, will host a gala and concert on the ship. Zito, the San Francisco Giants left-hander who went to high school in San Diego, founded Strikeouts for Troops to raise money to help wounded troops and military families.

"We believe there is a natural connection and synergy between Strikeouts For Troops and Major League Baseball, and by teaming together, we can bring awareness to and make a difference in the lives of our troops and military families in their time of need," Zito said in a statement.

Organizers hope to have the same broadcast group televise the hoops game and the Strikeouts for Troops concert.
