Bill Self of Kansas to receive Legends of Coaching

  •

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Bill Self of Kansas will receive the Legends of Coaching award in April, recognizing college basketball coaches who exemplify John Wooden's high standards of coaching and personal integrity.

The award will be presented at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in conjunction with the Wooden Award presentation to the male and female college players of the year.

Self has a 269-53 record with a winning percentage of 83.5 - highest in Kansas history - in nine seasons with the Jayhawks. He guided them to the national title game last season and an NCAA championship in 2008. His Kansas teams have won eight straight Big 12 regular-season titles and five league tournament championships.

Self is the second Kansas coach chosen for the award that began in 1999. Roy Williams, now at North Carolina, was the recipient while at Kansas in 2003. Self succeeded Williams at the school.

Other winners have included Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Calhoun of Connecticut, Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, Pat Summitt of Tennessee, and Tom Izzo of Michigan State.
