Indiana tops AP preseason poll

The Sports Xchange

Indiana took the top spot in the men's college basketball AP preseason poll released Friday.

The Hoosiers garnered 43 of the 65 first-place votes, while No. 2 Louisville (20) and No. 3 Kentucky (2) received the others.

The Big Ten earned three spots in the top five, with Ohio State and Michigan ranking fourth and fifth.

Indiana last received the No. 1 spot in the preseason AP poll in the 1979-80 season. The Hoosiers were led by freshman point guard Isiah Thomas and Mike Woodson (the current New York Knicks coach). They went 21-8 and reached the Mideast Regional semifinals of the 1980 NCAA Tournament.

The last time a conference represented three spots in the preseason poll's top five was in 2008-09 when the Big East landed Connecticut (second), Louisville (third) and Pittsburgh (fifth).

Kentucky won the NCAA championship in April.
