NCAA investigating Alaska-Fairbanks athletics

  •

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The University of Alaska Fairbanks says the NCAA is investigating six of its athletic programs, including the Division I hockey team.

A university announcement says the NCAA has initiated a major infractions case involving secondary infractions that were self-reported in 2011.

The university says the infractions involve eligibility for 17 athletes over four years.

Chancellor Brian Rogers says the infractions were not the result of wrongdoing or poor academic performance by athletes but were a university mistake.

The university says advising and eligibility certification systems failed to identify students who had not earned the required number of countable credits or who had informally switched majors but not filed the appropriate forms to do so officially.

The investigation will review athletes in hockey, men's and women's basketball, swimming, skiing and rifle.
