Do you have a job where no matter what you decide, a number of people are certain to be unhappy?
Welcome to the world of the NCAA men's basketball selection committee.
As the 10 members of the committee construct the NCAA Tournament bracket on March 17, several teams will believe that they deserved a bid and were left out of the field of 68. As part of the blind test series at CBSSports.com, we will present unidentified resumes leading up to Selection Sunday, offering you the chance to vote for which team you believe is most deserving of an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
After voting in the poll on the left-hand side of the page, click on the link at the bottom of this article to reveal the identities of the squads.
Both of these teams are in Jerry Palm's latest projected field of 68. Team A's conference record is 9-7, while Team B's is 9-6. Both of these programs come from major conferences, which have produced multiple national champions in recent history. These squads are ranked closely in terms of RPI (Rating Percentage Index), with fewer than five spots separating the two.
RPI is a measure to order programs based on the team's wins, losses and the strength of schedule.
Both of these teams have one victory against a top 10 RPI squad, while Team A has three in the top 15. However, Team A also has a double-digit point loss to a squad ranked greater than 250 in RPI.
Which program do you think is most worthy of an at-large bid?
Record: Indicates the team's overall record this season.
SOS Rank: Indicates a ranking of the team's strength of schedule this season. This is compiled by generating the average winning percentage of opponents the team has faced this season. That figure is then ranked out of the 347 Division I teams.
Record vs. Top 50 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked in the Top 50 in RPI.
Record vs. 51-100 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 51-100 in RPI.
Record vs. 101-200 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 101-200 in RPI.
Record vs. 201-plus RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 201 and greater in RPI.
Team A will appear in the left column, while Team B will be on the right.
