Georgetown in favor of fast Big East breakup

WASHINGTON (AP) - Georgetown coach John Thompson III is all in favor of getting the breakup of the Big East over and done with as soon as possible.

The coach said Friday that it's "the sooner the better" for all parties involved.

Georgetown is one of seven non-football schools splintering from the Big East. The conference bylaws require that departing members give 27 months' notice, but talks are under way to accelerate the process.

Presidents of Big East schools met Friday in Atlanta but did not announce a resolution.

The new league - which would like to retain the Big East name - could debut as early as next season.

The other schools breaking away are St. John's, Villanova, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall and Providence.
