The NCAA men's basketball selection committee members are the match-makers of March.
The blind dates the committee will plan on Selection Sunday, however, won't include candle-lit dinners.
Not only does the committee have to determine which teams receive bids to the NCAA Tournament, but it also has to seed the field of 68 and decide which matchups will be featured.
As part of the CBSSports.com blind test series, we have been presenting unidentified team resumes and offering you the chance to vote on which squad you think is more deserving of a better seed in the NCAA Tournament. After examining the team resumes in the chart, you may make your selection in the poll on the left-hand side of the page. Then, click on the link at the bottom to reveal the identities of the teams.
In this installment of the series we pose the following question: Which team deserves the better seed in the NCAA Tournament?
Both of these squads are currently listed in Jerry Palm's latest bracket projection. One of these programs, however, carries a much more favorable seed, while the other is squarely on the bubble. This may be due to one squad being projected as its regular-season conference champion, while the other is competing for an at-large bid in the tournament.
Both of these teams are ranked very closely in RPI (Rating Percentage Index), with fewer than 10 spots separating the two. RPI is a formula used to rank teams based on wins, losses and strength of schedule.
Team A's conference record is 11-4, while Team B's is 12-4.
Team B's two best victories are against the 13th- and 14th-ranked squads in RPI, while Team A's two best wins are against the 27th- and 30th-ranked programs.
If you're on the 10-member selection committee, which team do you think deserves the better seed?
Record: Indicates the team's overall record this season.
SOS Rank: Indicates a ranking of the team's strength of schedule this season. This is compiled by generating the average winning percentage of opponents the team has faced this season. That figure is then ranked out of the 347 Division I teams.
Record vs. Top 50 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked in the Top 50 in RPI.
Record vs. 51-100 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 51-100 in RPI.
Record vs. 101-200 RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 101-200 in RPI.
Record vs. 201-plus RPI: Indicates the team's record against opponents ranked 201 and greater in RPI.
