Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The University of Detroit Mercy signed men's basketball coach Perry Watson to a six-year contract on Tuesday.
Watson, who has guided the Titans to four postseason appearances in 10 seasons, is six wins away from becoming the second coach in school history to post 200.
"Perry has brought tremendous continuity to our program," Detroit athletic director Brad Kinsman said. "It's very special to have a coach so committed to his city and university." Kinsman said. "Most significantly, virtually every one of his players has received his degree. And this university is very proud of that." Under Perry, Detroit Mercy won 25 games, captured the conference title and won a game in the NCAA Tournament in both 1998 and 1999. In '98, the team upset St. John's and then knocked off UCLA one year later.
The Titans earned bids to the National Invitation Tournament in 2001 and 2002.
They reached the Final Four in 2001.
"We've had 10 great years," Watson said. "And I'm glad to have the chance to continue this success with our young men both on the court and off the court."
