NEW YORK -- Albie Grant, a star basketball player for Long Island University in the 1960s, died at 60.

He died Thursday following complications from diabetes, the school said.

Grant played for LIU from 1963-66, leading the Blackbirds to a 52-20 record. He is the only player in the history of the Brooklyn school to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds for his career.

Grant was a strong inside player despite being only 6-foot-4. He enjoyed his best season in 1965-66 when he carried LIU to its second straight league championship and was honored as the most valuable player in the metropolitan area.

Grant was born in New York and taught at various schools in the city.

His funeral is Wednesday in New York, the school said.
