Fairleigh Dickinson 70, Long Island U. 62
HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) Tamien Trent had 18 points and keyed a 27-3 run late in the second half as Fairleigh Dickinson rallied for a 70-62 win in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference tournament on Sunday night.
Gordon Klaiber added 16 points for FDU (19-12), who will host Wagner in the title game on Wednesday night. Wagner advanced earlier Sunday with a 63-60 upset win over top-seeded Monmouth.
LIU (14-15) was paced by reserve forward Derek Bell, who had a game- and career-high 31 points. Bell, who was averaging just seven points per game this season, had 18 in the first half as the Blackbirds ran out to a 32-19 lead at intermission.
FDU had started off strong, scoring the game's first six points, but LIU took control with a 21-5 run and then held FDU scoreless for the final five minutes of the half.
However, the Knights came roaring back after the break, with Trent and Mensah Peterson both hitting two 3-pointers during a 14-5 run. LIU responded with its own 12-2 run, including 6 points by Bell, but FDU took the lead for good when Klaiber put in a rebound with just under six minutes remaining.
