Catamounts' success good and bad for next coach
The 39-year-old Lonergan, who was also an assistant coach at Colgate University, left Catholic before last season for a job as an assistant under Gary Williams at Maryland. His time in College Park lasted just one year. Now Lonergan will wait until after the Terps finish their NIT run before making the transition to Burlington and trying to comb the state for another Coppenrath.
Despite Lonergan's accomplishments, there was somewhat of a public outcry in Vermont because athletic director Dr. Robert Corran bypassed Brennan's longtime assistant, Jesse Agel, in favor of Lonergan.
Brennan will likely field a hefty offer from ESPN for a TV gig now that the Catamounts' run is over.
The good news for Lonergan is that the NCAA Tournament was more exposure for his Catamounts, which could boost his recruiting efforts. The bad is that expectations may have risen with the Friday victory.
