Achara's torn labrum requires season-ending surgery
PITTSBURGH -- Duquesne junior forward Kieron Achara, voted the most improved player in the Atlantic 10 last season, needs shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-9 Achara, who also plays center, tried to play through a torn labrum in his left (shooting) shoulder, but was only 5-of-22 from the field in three games, averaging 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds.
As a sophomore, Achara averaged 11.5 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds.
Achara, a native of Scotland, will undergo surgery Dec. 15 and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight months. He was injured while blocking a shot in a preseason scrimmage against Cleveland State on Nov. 12.
Duquesne (1-3) plays Pittsburgh (5-0) on Wednesday night.
