Penn St. 65, Mount St. Mary's 53

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Geary Claxton scored 16 points and Jamelle Cornley added 14 as Penn State beat Mount St. Mary's 65-53 Saturday.

The duo did most of their damage in the second half, after a solid team effort by the Nittany Lions led to a 32-17 lead at halftime. The Mountaineers never came closer than 10 points in the second, despite a strong second half performance by Landy Thompson from three-point range.

Thompson hit five of 10 from long range in the game to lead the Mountaineers with 19 points. But the team's performance was just 29 percent from the floor in the first half and 39 percent overall.

After giving away their first two possessions, the Nittany Lions (8-3) went on scoring runs of 10 and 14 points, broken only by a pair of Kiel Butler free throws. Penn State led by as much as 20 in the first half, until the Mountaineers (2-9) finally managed consecutive buckets with just under six minutes to play.

Travis Parker scored 10 for the Lions. Kiel Butler had 10 for the Mountaineers.
