LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Freshman guard Sherron Collins scored a game-high 20
points to lead No. 3 Kansas to a 90-55
exhibition victory over Division II Emporia State on Tuesday night.
It was the second time in as many games that a freshman has led the
Jayhawks in scoring. Darrell Arthur had 21 points in a 99-69 exhibition
win over Washburn on Thursday.
Collins was 8-of-12 from the field and had four 3-pointers, leading six
Jayhawks in double figures.
Russell Robinson, Brandon Rush and Arthur each had 12 points, Darnell
Jackson had 11 and Julian Wright had 10 for Kansas, which led 41-37 at
halftime before using a 27-2 run midway through the second half to pull
away.
Wright also had 14 rebounds and Arthur 10 for the Jayhawks, who open
their regular season Saturday against Northern Arizona.
The Hornets went more than eight minutes without scoring during their
second-half drought, and scored only nine points in the first 14 minutes
of the second half.
DeAndre Townsend led Emporia State with 18 points and Donta Watson had
10.
The Jayhawks only dressed eight scholarship players for the game, hours
after learning that 6-foot-11 forward C.J. Giles had been dismissed from
the team for what coach Bill Self called "a pattern of irresponsible
behavior and disrespect for team rules."
Center Sasha Kaun (knee) and guards Mario Chalmers (toe) and Jeremy Case
(groin) also missed the game. They sat in street clothes at the end of
the bench.
