Sun Devils report: Getting inside

Even star freshman James Harden couldn't save the Sun Devils on this weekend.

Hindered by a groin injury, Harden seemed to tire in the second half of Arizona State's 72-61 loss to Washington. He had 13 points in the first 12 minutes, then only four more on 1-for-3 shooting in the second half.

"With that kind of injury," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said, "it only gets worse when you get tired."

Two days later against Washington State, Harden had the ball and a chance to win the game. He drove to the hoop and got neither the basket nor a call from officials, and WSU escaped with a 56-55 win.

"I wanted the ball," said Harden, whose 25-point effort was his 10th 20-point game of the season. "Coach drew up the play. We just didn't come up with the victory. I didn't come up with it."

Harden came up with almost everything else, adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals from his guard position.

The Sun Devils have lost three in a row since a 14-1 start, and coach Herb Sendek didn't take this one lying down.

"We got James, who's having a terrific half, going hard to the basket," Sendek said. "He got two feet in the paint. He was at the rim. You guys saw what I saw."

Finally, I answered a very long Q&A from Welcome To Loud City, the Oklahoma City Thunder blog here at SBNation. You can read the entire interview about James Harden following the jump.

1. Thunder fans have been hearing a lot lately about James Harden's talents, but we haven't heard much else about him. Could you shed any light on what kind of a person, or teammate he ...(more)

A conversation with Derek Glasser

Probably no one was more disappointed last season ended than Derek Glasser. The ASU point guard was a different player down the stretch. He pinned 16 points on both  Washington and USC in the Pac-10 Tournament, then poured in a career-best 22 on Temple in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He finished with averages of 8.8 ...(more)

Harden goes 3rd to the Thunder

ASU's James Harden was selected third overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He is the first Sun Devil to be drafted since 2005 and just the eighth ASU player ever drafted in the first round.

In his two seasons at ASU, Harden (6-5, 222) was a two-time Pac-10 first-teamer. This past season, he was al ...(more)

Harden joins OKC youth movement

OKLAHOMA CITY - Sam Presti doesn't remember exactly what time it was when Arizona State sophomore James Harden wrapped up an evening session shooting hoops and the two were finally able to go out to dinner.

Harden was getting ready for his pre-draft workout with Oklahoma City and he wanted to make sure he was on his game - and ...(more)

Sendek meets with Texas guard

ASU coach Herb Sendek is in San Antonio today, meeting John Paul Stevens High standout Brandon Thompson, along with the guard's grandfather and coach.

Thompson has drawn attention the last few weeks, but he has been a secret most of the year. And as ASU, Georgetown and Texas Tech close in, his coach, John Hirst, t ...(more)

Jeff Pendergraph has gone through eight cars since arriving at Arizona State - "all beaters," he said - probably from navigating a college basketball career filled with metaphorical potholes.

No one on ASU's basketball team appreciates its success this season more than the senior forward. For three seasons, he played the role of crash-test dummy until the Sun Devils found the ...(more)

Miller should have ASU fans worried

And we thought this would be a quiet sports month.

 Harden/Herb speculation

ASU fans should cheer for North Carolina this weekend. Perhaps then, UNC forward Tyler Hansbrough might cross paths with ASU sophomore James Harden and tell him that staying in college was the best decision he had ever made.

Harden told me Monday that he's considering returning for his junior season.  I pressed him on the issue, ...(more)

Sendek is hitting his stride

College basketball has a slimy side. In the dark corners of this wonderful sport, talent is peddled, coddled and recruited by men who negotiate better than they coach. Thankfully, Herb Sendek seems above this cesspool.

But now he must go out and sell his program. Hard.

Beginning next week, Sendek will embark on his own American ...(more)

Pendergraph preparing for draft

Since finishing his ASU basketball career, Jeff Pendergraph has flown to New York to secure agent Charles Grantham, who also represents Suns star Amare Stoudemire. He has flown to Sacramento to lasso a financial manager.
