What Baylor did during its brief stay in the NCAA Tournament was a microcosm of the entire season.

The Bears struggled to defend well this year, and in a 90-79 first-round loss to Purdue, the circumstances were no different. The Boilermakers converted on several open looks and gained command early, sending the Bears to a 21-11 final record.

The breakthrough Baylor experienced by reaching the NCAA Tournament is commendable. It ended a 20-year drought. To achieve that benchmark as a coach is also a tribute to Scott Drew, who took over a program that was rocked by tragedy, scandal and attrition, and was nearly handed the death penalty by the NCAA.

Drew chose to put those issues aside and forge ahead. His ability to recruit talented players under the circumstances was impressive. He assembled a deep array of guards and a formidable big man in forward Kevin Rogers.

But as Baylor moves forward under Drew, defense must become a priority. An explosive backcourt enabled the Bears to outscore opponents much of the season because of the diverse problems it presented. But if Baylor ever struggled to make shots -- which all teams do at times -- it was always at a disadvantage.

The good news is, defensive principles are something the Bears can still learn while perfecting their offensive touch. The only senior contributor who leaves is Aaron Bruce, a point guard. But even Bruce's career raises concerns. The Australian import never seemed to improve during his stay after making a freshman splash. That creates questions concerning the ability of Drew to develop talent.

I hope I'm not speaking to pre-emptively, but it looks like Baylor's not gonna pull it out.  I just thought I should let you know that you guys got royally screwed.  You go through an entire tournament playing strong, a perfect way to end the season, and you get to go into a Madison Square Garden filled with 145 busfulls of penn state fans and a group of legally reta ...(more)

What do Baylor fans think the possiblilty is of Drew leaving for another coaching job after the season? I'm an Arizona fan and Drew has been one of the names kicked around as our next potential head coach.

I just wanted to say congratulations to the Bears in making it to the NIT finals. I didn't like when we lost to you guys in the Big12 tournament, but you're making it look like a lot better loss with your current success. Way to represent the Big 12 and good luck in the championship game! I'll be rooting for you all.

on your Final Four apperance in the N.I.T. !!  Keep it going and win the whole thing !! As a fellow Big XII brother ( MIZZOU ) , it's nice to see the big 12 doing so well in the post season since our conf. has been disrespected all year nationally as being "NOT THAT GOOD!" What would they say if we could somehow win both major touneys? That would be sweet !!   GOO ...(more)

All Big 12 fans rejoice as another Big East team goes down.   I'm hoping you can send your seniors off with a deep run in the NIT.   Great job putting the Hoyas out of their misery.

Baylor... good run in the tournament.  Your team having to play four games in four days was a huge advantage for Mizzou today.  Your team showed a lot of heart and talent at the tournament.  I think with Coach Drew your program has a bright future near the top of the Big 12.

Unlike "Texas Sucks" I take the high road and say that you outplayed Texas when it counted. I hope you guys bring back the Big 12 title to the state of Texas. Don't let up, Bears. You are going to need every bit of cojones that you have used to beat KU and Texas. Oklahoma State and Mizzou are having a great tournament just like you guys. I am a Texas Longhorn fan and I will chee ...(more)

Amazing game by Baylor today. The bears deserve all the credit in the world for that one. I was so impressed with how they played today and unfortunately completely disgusted with the way my Jayhawks did. Oh well you win some you lose some and ive gotta give credit where its due. Great job Baylor! I hope you win the Big XII tournament! Good luck!
