Colonials report: Getting inside

Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes · Getting inside

Despite a late-year run that included five victories in the last six regular-season games, George Washington saw its postseason activities limited to a one-and-done appearance in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.

The 71-59 overtime loss to 12th-seeded St. Joseph's -- at home, no less -- left the Colonials with a 17-14 record and no spot in either the College Basketball Invitational or the CollegeInsider.com fields.

Earlier failures were just too much for the Colonials to overtime with their late rush.

The troubles included a four-game losing streak in late November and early December, and another of similar length in January. Two of the losses in the latter skid -- Harvard (no disgrace there, as it turns out) and St. Bonaventure -- were at home.

In fact, home games overall were part of George Washington's problem.

The Colonials were only 9-7 in the Smith Center, 7-5 on the road.

Give the Colonials another win or two at home and they just might have been in consideration for a return trip to the CBI.

There were mitigating circumstances for George Washington's early struggles.

The Colonials played the whole season without guard Lasan Kromah, who had averaged nearly 12 points a game as a freshman last year.

Kromah, who shot 45.6 percent from 3-point range in leading the team in 3-point baskets with 47, had foot surgery after being injured in practice shortly before the season opener.

Without him, the Colonials ended up with only one player, junior guard Tony Taylor, averaging in double figures for the season.

But the Colonials had only two seniors on the roster, center Joseph Katuka, a starter, and forward Jabari Edwards. Edwards had arthroscopic knee surgery in late December and was out for a month. He played in only 16 games.
