Hoyas report: Notes, quotes

Strategy and personnel · Getting inside · Notes, quotes

--The Huskies first half offensive rebounding combined with the Hoyas inability to make 3s from start to finish did in Georgetown in their second round Big East Tournament game. UConn grabbed nine offensive boards early on, leading to 10 second points. Their aggressive energy also put the Hoyas big men Julian Vaughn and Nate Lubick into foul trouble and Georgetown into a 42-30 halftime hole. The perimeter-centric Hoyas could not claw their way out of it as they shot 5-for-22 (22.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

--Starting center Julian Vaughn played only 12 minutes against Connecticut, partly due to picking up three fouls in the first half. However, the reality is the 6-foot-9 senior has gone as cold as one could be from the floor over the last four games. Since early in the first half against Cincinnati on Feb. 23, Vaughn has not made a single field goal, missing 15 straight shots. Averaging around nine points for the much of the season, he has not scored a single point the past two games. Without the Hoyas perimeter game in sync, defenses can focus more on Vaughn and his under-the-rim style is not working in traffic.

--Some positive news out of the loss to UConn: The aggressive play of guard Jason Clark. The Hoyas third-leading scorer was averaging a paltry 7.7 points during the first three games of the losing streak, but came alive with a team-high 23 points against the Huskies. Though his outside game was still faulty (1-for-6 from 3) Clark did not settle for long bombs and was 6-for-7 on drives and post moves.

BY THE NUMBERS
22 -- The margin of defeat for Georgetown in its 69-47 loss to Cincinnati on March 5. That marked the Hoyas' biggest loss of the season. They followed it up with a 79-62 beatdown at the hands of Connecticut in the first round of the Big East tournament.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"With Chris Wright sitting on the bench in a suit, not being able to play, the group that's in that locker room can win. We have to get to that point." -- Coach John Thompson III, to The Washington Post.
