THE GOOD NEWS
If you believe most of Illinois' woes were related to its inability to shoot from 15 feet and beyond, then the Illini could return to its customary Big Ten-contending status next year. Why? Because the top two shooters in Illinois' practice gym weren't eligible this year.

When junior Jamar Smith returns to the lineup next fall -- and Kentucky transfer Alex Legion gains his eligibility in mid-December -- Illinois ought to be able to put at least two excellent shooters on the floor at all times when you add senior Trent Meacham (74 3s) and sophomore Demetri McCamey (50 3s).

Illinois' team dynamic also figures to change with the departure of seniors Brian Randle and Shaun Pruitt, the last links to the 2005 national runnerup team that went 37-2. Freshman such as McCamey and 7-foot-1 center Mike Tisdale has shown leadership qualities that should blossom in a new group, though hardy senior guard Chester Frazier will remain the team's soul.

THE BAD NEWS
While Illini fans might think it's nice that the oft-injured Randle and the oft-irritable Pruitt have run out of eligibility, who's going to run out there and do what they did? Illinois loses two of its top three scorers, its top two rebounders and its top two post defenders.

Illinois will need to find people with the strength to battle for rebounds (does incoming juco transfer Dominique Keller have the size at 6-foot-6, 225?) as well as someone who can score with his back to the basket. Tisdale has a nice array of moves, but he's too easily pushed off the block.

The Illini also need to figure out a way to push senior-to-be Rodney Alexander into becoming a consistent performer. The 6-foot-7 juco transfer is a wondrous leaper, but he too often settled for 3-pointers. More importantly, he couldn't figure out how to be a screener in the motion offense and didn't pick up all of the defensive nuances necessary to play regularly for Illinois.

KEY RETURNEES
Illinois' top scorers figure to come from the perimeter next year. Look for senior-to-be Trent Meacham (10.1 ppg), sophomore Demetri McCamey (8.2 ppg), returning junior Jamar Smith (8.0 ppg his first two years) and Kentucky transfer Alex Legion, a pure shooter, to offer a balanced perimeter attack.

Either 7-foot-1 Mike Tisdale (3.6 ppg), 6-10 Mike Davis (2.6 ppg) or incoming junior-college transfer Dominique Keller needs to become a consistent scorer in the post. Keller averaged 25 points and 9 rebounds for Lee College in Texas, but he didn't shoot high percentages and it usually takes time for a juco to find his way in the Big Ten.

ROSTER REPORT

--G Demetri McCamey wrapped up a promising freshman season by earning a place on the Big Ten's all-tournament team. McCamey (8.2 ppg, 3.2 apg) wasn't as consistent as coach Bruce Weber would like, but he did show hints of potential greatness when he smacked Purdue for 26 points in the Big Ten quarterfinals and dropped 31 points on Indiana during the regular season.

--Several Illini will need to postpone their offseason workouts in order to take time to heal. Junior Trent Meacham is expected to undergo surgery to fix bone spurs on his ankle that affected him much of the season. Junior guard Chester Frazier (knees) and freshman Bill Cole (stress fracture in leg) also need time.

--Senior C Shaun Pruitt has accepted an invitation to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament on April 9-12 in an effort to increase his NBA and European exposure.

I am becoming increasingly frustrated. I didn't even see these 2 games and I am becoming agitated by the fact that nobody wants to step up for this team besides for the 2 Mike's and Demetri. I heard Alex Legion got the start, bad move Bruce.

I would've started Jeff Jordan. I hear he's been playing pretty well. He's been passing the ball well and penetrating into the lane.

But

Word on the street is that Bradley Beal is playing his recruitment extremely close to the vest.  Word is that he already knows where he is going to commit, however does not want to say just yet!  Beal appears to be not only a spectacular basketball player, but also a really great kid, who is concerned about having to give the other coaches the bad news!  I have heard that sources cl ...(more)

Wow.

I leave for a "relaxing" holiday with the inlaws, we drop a couple of close and disappointing games, and suddenly fans have written off the entire season, posts about how we can't get quality recruits, how we have nobody who can step up besides the juniors, how the juniors didn't put in enough work in the offseason...

All of this only a week after posts expe ...(more)

Things I like:

Offense is significantly more balanced than we have seen in 4 years.  We can score from almost any position on the floor, and have three or four players who can actually create their own shot, in McCamey, Richardson, Paul and Keller.  Plus, Davis and Tisdale are extremely efficient scorers when they get the ball in scoring position.

In addition to the

Tisdale had 18 points and shot 8-10, but a 7'0" presence needs more than five boards and one block. He needs to establish a presence on the block on offense as well.

Davis had half as many rebounds as he should've, and his six-shooter was firing blanks.

Richardson goes 1-5 and only has one rebound and no steals in 18 minutes. He needs to attack the rim and come up with a

I'm an optimist when it comes to the Illini, and it was a big blow to that optimism when they blew it against Utah.

But now after this loss to Bradley, it's obvious that Illinois is just a young, inexperienced team. Dmac is our proven leader, but he's slightly All-Big ten (2nd team), Mike Davis shows flashes of the star he can be, Keller has been solid, and Tisd

Mom supposedly liked Illinois and wanted him closer to home, but Beal loved Billy D. and he's very tight with Austin Rivers.

Unlike some other recruitments, Beal did his relatively drama free and with class. Good luck to him.

Up next: Chasson Randle and/or Devin Langford!

Well congrats to Bradley for taking that one.

Anyone else not really feel so bad after that one?  Sure, there's another L on the record line, but that's about it.  The Illini definitely outplayed the Braves and it looks like the freshmen figured out how to play on the road midway through the second half.

The Braves really got some help on some turnover calls...

Wow, I sat here and thought to myself that there was no way that Utah could score 17 more points than the Illini after halftime.  I forgot that Illinois actually had to score a few points, though, in order to win the game.  Turnovers and poor execution in the second half.  Ended up depending on Tisdale's outside shot for the win?  How does that happen.  How about hitting a ...(more)

I sure hope the Braves and Utes are tournament teams.   Bradley just made sure they were the best team in IL.

I don't live in Illinois, I live in Florida.  I am forced to watch guys like Tim Tebow and I am not a Gator fan.  But I do get to see a guy will a huge heart and the will to win.

Well Brandon Paul (along with DJ Richardson) got the start tonight and scored 22 points, had about 5 assists, 4 or 5 boards...PROBLEM SOLVED. Looks like we'll be starting two freshmen this season as Paul stole the show in a great effort (yes against weak comp) by the team.

Here's your new starting lineup: Tisdale, Davis, Paul, Richardson and McCamey.

And they hit the boa

i thought after the utah loss we would rally to win against bradly but instead we blow a five point lead with about 2 minutes to go. we have possibly the worst three point shooting in the big ten. it looks like were not going to the tourney this year and maybe an nit bubble team. im so dissapointed, this was worse then the utah loss. now we have to go to clemson 4-2 and have to win. if we dont we' ...(more)

I'll preface by saying that my ESPN360 wasn't working at the beginning so I was listening to radio, then watching, then following stat tracker, so I didn't get to see all of it. First things first though, Brandon Paul. Wow that kid can play. Sure would have been nice to see some second half points, but 20 in the first half?? Wow. Haven't seen a U of I player that could do that in a while. Props go ...(more)
